Nice speeds this afternoon, but uplink pretty poor (and RootMetrics shows other tests under 10). Very odd.

It's common not odd surely? CA at the moment doesn't aggregate on the uplink so you just use the PCC. If that's b7 then it's weaker and not as high speeds can be achieved. See it s lot on CA.
When I've had faster speeds, I do recall having slower uplink speeds and said to someone from EE today (in response to a conversation from the above Tweet) that it's happened before. That's a bit of a limitation then. If you need the fast speeds because you're connecting to a remote network, or syncing files via Dropbox etc, then you want fast speeds in both directions. 10Mbps up isn't slow, but 50 is preferable! |

I wasn't aware of that, and assumed uplink would be the same regardless. At home, I'll often be on band 3 only and get speeds of around 60-100, and uplink speeds of anything up to 45.

Few things they can do about it but they all have advantages/disadvantages. Uplink CA takes time to build into the RAN. Enable 64QAM on the UL, already done but pitiful device support (takes the 50Mbps max to 75mbps max and needs good signal conditions). Push uploading users onto a different band such as band 3 and still aggregate with B7 - suspect they might do this in places would be a bit silly not to.

I'm intrigued, when did 64QAM in the upload start? Also is it just 64QAM in the UL, or has 256QAM DL also been enabled?
My Pixel hasn't had 256QAM update pushed yet so I can't tell you but as far as I know it is not. |

Check on NSG in the signalling and you'll see it there. Huawei sites only for EE. Voda Huawei has it enabled as well. O2 Ericsson as well might have it.
My Pixel hasn't had 256QAM update pushed yet so I can't tell you but as far as I know it is not. In an LTE System Information message I see the text enable 64QAM: true. I take it this is what I'm looking for? I'm wondering if my Xiaomi Mi5 is compatible, it was advertised as a cat13/12 device, but perhaps they've disabled 256/64QAM for now. |

Thanks for that, hadn't noticed this recent development.

What are the chances of 800MHz being properly launched this week?

Is it normal that 4G Calling will just sometimes not work without any specific reason?
On my iPhone 7 my calls normally happen over 4G, but sometimes randomly I drop down to 3G when calling, even though I have perfect 4G reception. Calls&data are enabled in the settings and I'm on a pay monthly contract. |

Would that boost the signal and how much will EE pay for someone to do that. Sounds like my ideal job.

On Sunday morning, I was in Leicester Square and needed to call my wife to arrange where to meet before a film was starting. I had 4G and attempted three times to call her, each time the call failed! On the fourth attempt, it started to ring. That's poor. It may well be a problem for the Pixel XL only, but nevertheless, 4G calling needs to be more reliable than that or EE's figures are going to be seriously messed up. However, depending on the problem, I wonder if these failed attempts would actually register? |

I'm actually contemplating turning 4G Calling off, as EE must be having problems.. It may be network wide or it might just be a firmware issue with my phone - but either way, it's a pain.

The weird thing is that the call doesn't fail, it simply just switches to 3G immediately and performs the call over CSFB.

EE are being very cautious about the conditions required to call over VoLTE and if the conditions aren't perfect, it will CSFB instead.
I mean I have an iPhone 7, newest software, 5 bars 4G reception, am on an EE Max plan and have 120Mbps throughput. What could be the reason for 4G calls being blocked? |

Ah ok and what would such conditions be?

Yep you'll see it's under PUSCH for upload. My Pixel's advertised as supporting it but it's not enabled yet
got to see if it works now from you! It's a shame that this year's flagships have opted not to support it. Hopefully they'll either be updated (unlikely for most) or next year's flagships will support it from day 1.

Same with me today on my Iphone SE. Someone called me and call dropped as soon as I answered. Later called my wife and 2 bars 4G but no ringing. Second time noo. 3-rd time success but then as soon as the call try do go down to 3G or EDGE the call drops.
