HD Voice could always be added onto 2G even if 3G was turned off. If you have a VoLTE capable phone you are never going to see 3G again in a years time. If you don't have a VoLTE phone, 3G (over time) is going to be carrying less calls and have less overall users meaning that it should be able to run without congestion on less spectrum.
4G+VoLTE seems to solve the issues of 2G/3G, but don't discount how much better a 3G data connection is over a 2G data connection on a phone that doesn't do 4G. In the short term 3G has to stay, but in the long term there should be enough users with VoLTE phones to completely get rid of 3G (to refarm all the spectrum), and the people with phones so old they don't do VoLTE will probably be the same people who only care about calls and texts which 2G handles just fine. By killing off 2G rather than 3G, you'd completely retire all 2G only devices. By killing off 3G, all devices would still work on 2G. I think this is a major reason as to why 3G would go before 2G. As it is 4G1800 power will be cranked up to full (even slightly beyond current 2G coverage due to 4G robustness) more than likely before the end of 2017. Even without 800 that would be awesome. |

I'm tiring of it now to be honest.
I'm going to try and sum up instead using A: Common sense and B: a quote from ja 1. The designers of 2G were visionaries. 2. The designers of 3G were idiots (that's my quote, feel free to use : ) 3. The designers of LTE could have been visionaries if only they hadn't stumbled at the last hurdle and through sheer incompetence for some reason didn't consider the consequences of releasing LTE with no mandatory voice. To Sum up. 2G is the only complete fit for purpose cellular system we have. 4G will be, but only nearly 5 years after launch. 3G must die, die, die...... 5G might, just might, work properly out of the box. How was that? |

What's so inherently wrong with 3G?

Though where you can get a 3G signal which is not congested (which is most places), 3G works magnificently. You can get 20Mbps all day long on it. 2G, on the other hand, can do a maximum of 0.01x the speed of 3G... 20Mbps vs 200kbps (or even 55kbps), what would you choose? Forgive me for repeating myself, but (certainly for the medium term) 3G needs to stay. If spectrum was an issue, I'd be more interested in refarming 2G1800. One day, in the very long term, there will be a point where everyone is using VoLTE devices, in which case both 2G and 3G go to 4G (possibly leaving 5MHz of 2G on for M2M, which would be invisible to phones). Removing 3G will leave many phones without a data connection - and seeing those customers move to other networks. |

![]() https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...nt=photo%2cpng *crosses fingers that it's still connected in the morning* Quite a shock when my adsl was installed and I was back to 6mbps down and 0.3mbps up, Ive just had BTs so called fibre installed, which can't get even half of that mobile speed ... Though parts of This thread are starting to remind me of this scene from red dwarf.. https://youtu.be/TxWN8AhNER0 Given the choice I'd keep 3g and ditch 2g for the same reasons as CheshireBumpkin said plus I hate the way once you get on 2g you can often get beeched there for ages as there doesn't seem to be a sib19 system like 3g to 4g of it there is it doesn't work or not on older masts.. Still holding you to our 800mhz performance bet Devon! It might have good coverage but I'm still betting it's highly restricted, and below 3g in priority specially if emergency services are relying on it too. I wonder how much testing has been going on regarding the emergency services, would be really bad PR for EE if there were a drop in coverage from tetra. I still remember the press about communication issues between the emergency services on the 7/7 London attacks.. |

Your reminding me Cheshire of when I moved house last year and had no broadband for a few weeks, I had to get by using my EE huawei Broadband box, hanging it out the window to get onto a mast in Crewe, how those days of 60-80mbps download and 20 up were tough going 😉
Quite a shock when my adsl was installed and I was back to 6mbps down and 0.3mbps up, Ive just had BTs so called fibre installed, which can't get even half of that mobile speed ... In the medium term we will see the demise of 3G, in the long term we will be on 5G or even 6G...
I might be more forgiving on 2G if we ever see HD Voice on it - but until then, I still think that 3G for voice/data and 4G for data is the best combination. |

EE 800mhz is above 3G in priority currently.
The priority should be: 4G2600 > 4G1800 > 4G800 > 3G2100. [>2G1800 for old devices, with 2G only being activated if there is nothing else, and going back to 3G or 4G at the earliest opportunity] |

When we are on 5G or 6G, we shouldn't need to worry about having 2G, 3G or even 4G... if 5G launches with voice as standard, everything can be gradually shifted across to 5G.

The current problem is that to switch from 4G to 3G to 2G works whilst using data, but you can't switch back up again - having to stop data to pick up a better signal. Annoying when streaming or using some sat nav apps. |

I'm hoping with data active (ie, streaming radio etc) that we can switch between all the frequencies of 4G, up and down, without disconnecting.

Getting stuck on the lowest available tech sucks (I hate that word now thanks to three #makeitshite) Well done to EE making a sensible call on the 800mhz priority, just hope that 5mhz can cope! Large indoor gatherings might struggle, but I'm sure no worse then a weak 3g signal would and a dam site better then the wg edge I see in a lot of big buildings in Manchester on my other halfs EE phone. |

good to know!
So your handset will switch to 800 well before you end up with an unusable 1800 connection. Eventually frequency switching will not be required as we will all have CA handsets. These will be connected to all frequencies at once and this allows the network to more accurately load balance between them simply by altering the bias one way or the other. |
