Ofcom consultation - 700MHz for mobile services by 2020
Everything Goes
12-03-2016
Ofcom is doing a consultation on 25MHz of spectrum in the 700MHz band, which is currently used by Digital Terrestrial TV. This has been talked about for a long time. The consultation closes on 20th May 2016 and Ofcom intends to publish a statement in Q3 2016. It seems likely that 4G or even 5G may be used on 700MHz.

I think if they do choose to use the middle 25MHz for SDL it's a very wise decision. Originally I was rather confused with the choice to only use 2x30MHz of FDD and not 2x40MHz, now this makes a lot more sense.

I wonder if Three/O2 will only bid on the SDL and not the paired spectrum.

Down to 600Mhz. They've been talking about this for years. There will be funds made available from government to help pay to move DVB frequencies etc.

It's a Europe wide thing anyway, effectively another DSO. COM 7 and 8 (which were only ever temporary) will go, and there will be a migration to DVB-T2 and more efficient coding.
Nevertheless it will lead to the obsolescence of some present receivers, and some may need new aerials

If you are buying a new TV or PVR from today onwards make sure it is DVB-T2 capable

Ofcom plan to start the process end of next year

I still predict all DTT services will be gone by 2030

Its game on for 700Mhz.

Quote:
“The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today confirmed that the 700MHz (694-790MHz) radio spectrum band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services, will be re-purposed for Mobile Broadband (4G / 5G) operators to use by Q2 2020; 18 months earlier than originally planned.

Ofcom’s move, which will see existing television and wireless microphone services being gradually migrated into the neighbouring 600MHz band over a period of three years (starting in Q3/Q4 2017 – see the regulator’s roll-out MAP at the bottom of this article), has been in the works for the past couple of years.

In keeping with that the regulator has also confirmed that 20MHz of “centre gap” spectrum in the 700MHz band will be similarly allocated for use by mobile data, albeit specifically mobile downlink (SDL) type services. The rest can be used by the more traditional 4G based mobile services, such as those offered via Three UK, O2, Vodafone and EE (BT).”

Suspect EE will want this. O2 and Vodafone will probably refarm their 900 MHz for 4g in future.
