your computer probably doesnt accept s-video, its more likely the s-video is for output to a tv from the computer.

The s-video connector will be for output only. There are video cards which will take input o s-video, but if you had one then you would know about it!
You need either a TV card, or a USB connected TV box, to feed the s-video connection into, in order to watch videos on your pc. There is a site, tv-cards.com, which deals with this sort o thing. Their review of the card which I have, a Pinnacle PCTV Rave, is very accurate - " The PCTV rave is my favourite of the new PCTV range. The hardware works well and although basic, is of solid construction. Buy the card and ditch the software. Get your after-sales support here. For £30 you really can't go wrong." If you do buy that card, then use these drivers and DScaler to get a really good picture out of it.

Thanks for the advice guys, would i be right in thinking that if i buy this TV card ( the one suggested) then i would be able to use my DVD from my hi-fi then?
Would i need some software for the dvd then or not? |

It should work with the software included with the card. You don't need to use the software I recommended - though it is better and completely free.
The only problem might be with the scart to s-video conversion via your cable. Sometimes these don't work properly, giving only a black and white picture. I'm not 100% sure if it will work, 'cos I've never had that problem - I've only ever used s-video outputs from S-VHS VCRs and my Thomson DHD4000 as inputs and they work fine. If you post the model of your hi-fi , then maybe someone who has the same one can say if it works okay? I would feel guilty if you bought the card and couldn't get the proper signal to it!

I you have access to a 'proper' tv with an s-video input then you could try it out on that - if that is in colour then the Pinnacle card will also work.
