Problems with grooming

How do you all groom your cats? Do they like it?

We have 5 cats.

One of them is a Siamese and she loves grooming. As soon as she sees the brush she sits down ready for it and allows her claws to be cut as well.

The others range from wriggling to hissyfits to scratching and spitting when they are groomed.

As I am sick of cat fur all over the house and clothes I have decided that they are going to be regularly groomed.

How can we do it though without wearing Kevlar?

My cats like it but when I had a cat that didn't like being groomed I just used to get her on a table, hold her down gently but firmly by the scruff of the neck, and groom her. She would growl away but she loved it really.

The Kevlar question made me smile.

I'm afraid it's just "gently grab and get on with it", sort of thing. Starting them young with a little brush does help them get used to it.

My old tortie always hated the brush or comb (I've lost count of the number of different types of brush/comb I've bought over the years - I could open my own market stall), so we had to just hold her and do it. My son made me laugh until I cried, though, when he walked into the living room one day dressed in his motorbike leathers and helmet, gauntlets, boots and everything, and mumbled "Okay, I'm ready - where is she?" We couldn't groom her for laughing.

Edit: sorry, I meant to tell you. Out of all my cats, the one who most likes grooming is my little timid cat. She absolutely loves a flea comb going through her fur. I've no idea why - she runs a mile if she sees the grooming brush, but when she sees the comb she's instantly on my lap as if she's teleported. Very, very odd creatures, cats.
