Stupid and anoracky DVD filing question...
I've been building up a nice Classic Doctor Who DVD collection. I doubt I'll buy every episode in physical form, but I've got a decent number now.
Naturally I want to file them on the shelf in a logical order, and arranging them chronologically (by transmission date) is the obvious way. The problem here is with box sets of unrelated episodes, e.g. Revisitations 3 which has Troughton story, a Pertwee story and a Tom story. Should I keep this in the original box and place all 3 stories in, for example where Tomb of the Cybermen would go OR discard the box and place the individual episodes where they should go? |

Getting really nerdy now - Have you noticed that since the introduction of the Blue/ Purple BBC logo some years ago the DVD covers have been reversible, with the old style logo on the other side. This enables the really anal fan to have all the DVD's looking the same on the shelf. I'm amazed that makers actually took the trouble to do this, (I mean double sided DVD covers must cost more than single sided for a start) but I'm so glad that they did! |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this.

I remove all but the earliest chronological story in the boxset from the box, turn the box so the spine of the dvds show and put the stories that come after the first one in there instead.
Eg in my beneath the surface box I will have the silurians, ambassadors of death etc. This way I keep the box but don't ruin the order. |

So the boxed sets are just packaging together collections of existing single DVD releases in exactly the same cases?
Are there any boxed sets that don't use the original, single release DVD cases and coverss? |

I put the set boxes on top of a cupboard and arrange the discs in correct chronological (as transmitted) order on shelves. Eventually I will rewatch the whole lot in order (hopefully when a few more gaps have been filled).
Some of the boxes had weird things like cyberman masks so they wouldn't fit neatly on a shelf anyway. |

The Hobbit Extended Edition Trilogy. I was most displeased.
![]() [Off topic] I have that set. On re-viewing recently, the films seemed better than when I saw the theatrical cuts at the cinema. Not so much because they were extended editions - they benefited from watching them fairly close together. Not even close to the Lord of the Rings trilogy (trology?!) though! ![]() [/off topic] |

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad it's not just me
![]() Good idea davrosdodebird, I hadn't thought of that! adams66, I never realised that. I'm happy to have different coloured BBC logos on the spines so won't bother reversing them! |

Are there any boxed sets that don't use the original, single release DVD cases and coverss? Collections of linked consecutive stories, e.g. Trial of a Timelord Collections of linked but not consecutive stories, e.g. the Sontaran box set. Some of these may also be sold individually Collections of good stories with rubbish ones (with a tenuous link) as a means to get people to buy the rubbish story ![]() Finally, you get reissues of existing stories, but in new improved version (remastering, Vidifiring, more extras) e.g. the Revisitations box sets which contain 3 completely unconnected stories |

Are there any boxed sets that don't use the original, single release DVD cases and coverss? So the only way to get (for example) the special edition of Tomb of the Cybermen is in the Revisitations 3 Box set. It's still boxed individually but was never sold individually (in Region 2 anyway). |

Thanks POTD and Corwin.
It helps my OCD tendencies in this area* to know that I could have a uniform collection on my shelves in the future, even though I've bought some individuals and sets already (Revisitations). Other boxed sets I might get are going to be the same. ![]() (*)

Does anyone else have the Three Doctor's DVD with Bessie? It seemed like a good idea at the time but it takes up so much flipping space on the shelf.
And I'm torn about what to do with the The Robots of Death DVD as well. I see that there are special editions of both of these stories in Revisitations 3. I guess I could buy this and sell Bessie on but my Robots of Death DVD was signed by the great T.Baker himself so I can't very well dispose of that! |

I've ditched the boxes and put all the individual stories where they belong, chronologically. Seemed the most logical way of doing it to me.

One set of DVDs where I REALLY make sure the spines are in order and consistent, are the Series I to VIII Red Dwarf DVDs as they produce a continuous Red Dwarf logo which reaches across all 8 DVDs!
It just looks wrong otherwise! |

I have been collecting all of the DVDs and my dilemma is whether or not to do everything chronologically (i.e. interweaving the series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and the official animated Doctor Who stuff in with the main show line), simply keeping them off to the side or (as I have it now) Eccleston, Tennant, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Animated, Smith, Capaldi, etc..

Slightly off topic, but has anyone noticed the lack of secondhand Classic Dr Who era in the likes of CEX in recent months?
It's either the new series or nothing(or the odd one I've already got!)! |
