Have to say I do what a lot of other posters do and put the earliest story in with the next two stories in order in the box and put the other two stories in their proper place in order on my shelf.

Like Mr Popplewick I like a procedure which must be followed! No stories out of order no matter what boxes they may have come in!

I thought I'd give that a try and see how it looks, but have hit a snag. The earliest story in Revistations 2 is The Seeds of Death, and so the box should be filled up with the DVDs for The War Games and Spearhead from Space, but Spearhead from Space should be the first DVD in the box for Mannequin Mania. Hardly the most pressing problem in the world, but how have people who use this system resolved it?
When The Space Pirates is discovered in a locked storeroom in a TV station in Lagos or Nairobi, your problems will be solved

Failing that you could put the Spearhead from Space Bluray there...

To maintain absolute consistency you'd have to buy spearhead on DVD and Blu Ray, as blu ray cases are a different size to DVD cases. They're not as tall.

This thread is nicely geeky and Im enjoying it !

As I only own 4 DW dvds mainly due to not having the space (I would get them all if I could) does anyone have all the TV series DVDs and how much have you spent ?
Would you put the audios 'the lost TV episodes ' in your dvd collection as a complet ist ?

Why on earth do people do this? Throw away a box because it has different year stories.

It doesnt take a genius to take The Tomb of the Cybermen & The Three Doctors out of the box and put in The Deadly Assassin, The Face of Evil & The Robots of Death in the box instead.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone noticed the lack of secondhand Classic Dr Who era in the likes of CEX in recent months?

It's either the new series or nothing(or the odd one I've already got!)!
Sheffield branch was full of them last week!

A slightly surprising answer. Unless you are Matthew Waterhouse

I shelve my television DVDs alphabetically by title, so SJA and Torchwood are separate from Doctor Who; however, The Infinite Quest and Dreamland are inserted into the main Doctor Who run since they are essentially Doctor Who episodes, with DT as the protagonist. In visual terms, interweaving works well where each story comes in a separate box, but with larger boxed sets the result is a patchwork jumble that is far from pleasing the eye (I speak from experience). If you want an at-a-glance reminder of the chronological interrelationships of the series, there is a lot to be said for maintaining a handlist with transmission dates.
I have almost all of Doctor Who (I even have the Loose Canon reconstructions of the missing episodes). I am missing only six 20th Century Serials and Series 2-4 and Series 9. I have all of the spin-off series. This collection takes up a set of shelves all by itself! LOL! In fact, I may need to buy a larger shelving unit in the future for Doctor Who (even though this one has seven shelves in it). Because the single shelving unit is all Doctor Who, there is no need on my part to alphabetize, so chronological makes much more sense. Hence, the question about inter-weaving.

I've not got revisitations two yet (I bought revisitations 3 first as it had stories I was missing) but this would be my solution too; put an earlier story in, anything to keep the box on the shelf and keep the dvds in order

And another thing...

Did the order in which stories were broadcast ever differ from the order in which they were made? If so, then it's debatable which is the correct chronological order to shelve the DVDs in.

Yes, sometimes broadcast order was different from production order...

Davison's first series was filmed out of broadcast order not sure about any others.

Davison's first series was filmed out of broadcast order not sure about any others.
Lots of series had differing production order from what showed up on screen -

Season 09 - Peladon and Sea Devils were switched before broadcast.
Season 10 - Production order was Carnival of Monsters, Frontier In Space, Three Doctors, Planet Of The Daleks, Green Death.
Season 12 - Production order - Robot, Sontaran Experiment, Ark In Space, Revenge of the Cybs, Genesis of the Daleks.

Also, between 1972 and 1975 the first story of each season was actually the last one made in the previous production block. So Carnival Of Monsters was the last to be made in the season 9 production run, then they took a break. Time Warrior was produced straight after Green Death, Robot straight after Planet of the Spiders. Terror of the Zygons is a slightly special case as it was actually intended to close Tom Baker's first series, but when production of season 13 was brought forward to allow transmission to start in the autumn, this story was held back to give the team a tiny bit of breathing space)

Season 13 - Pyramids of Mars was made before Planet of Evil.
Season 15 - Production order - Invisible Enemy, Fang Rock, Sun Makers, Fendahl, Underworld, Invasion of Time.
Season 17 - Production order - Creature from the Pit, City Of Death, Destiny, Eden, Nimon.
Season 18 - State of Decay was the second story to be made, but shown fourth.
Season 19 - production order - Four To Doomsday, Visitation, Kinda, Castrovalva, Black Orchid, Earthshock, Timeflight.
Season 20 - Snakedance was the first made, but shown second.
Season 22 - Mark of the Rani and Two Doctors were switched at a late stage.
Season 25 - Production order - Remembrance, Greatest Show, Nemesis, Happiness Patrol.
Season 26 - Production order - Fenric, Battlefield, Survival, Ghost Light.

I'm slightly perturbed that I've typed out the above entirely from memory, I can remember useless facts like Doctor Who production information, yet I can't remember my car number plate, or my wife's birthday... I've not checked it against Wikipedia or anything, so if anything's wrong I apologise. But I have a nasty feeling that it's all correct and my brain is clearly even more full of pointless information than I thought...

Great knowledge adams66!

In the revived show, the episodes haven't always been in order either (e.g. Eleventh Hour wasn't Matt's first story), and Under the Lake/Before the Flood the first story filmed in S9

Indeed with the show now being much more an integrated series rather than a series of separate multi-part stories, filming order can be all over the place.. In S7b, for example, the new TARDIS set wasn't ready until several months after filming had started, so Matt and Jenna were continually jumping between different stories during 2012!

I think it's common knowledge that the normal practice for TV shows is to shoot out of sequence to be more efficient - shooting all scenes in a particular set or location in one visit to save time, regardless of when the scenes occur in the story.

I didn't know that now extended across whole series for Doctor Who!

I remember seeing a documentary on one of the DW DVDs a few years ago, that featured Peter Davison, and he said that Four to Doomsday had been filmed first, and NOT Castrovalva. He also said that if you look closely you can see his hair looking quite long and bushy in Castrovalva and quite short in Four to Doomsday.

How Peter's hair can grow that quickly after filming Four to Doomsday then going straight to Castrovalva, I don't know! That's what you get if you film stories back to front I s'pose.

I can't be certain, but I think it's on Come in Number Five.

See post 41 tiggerpooh. Castrovalva was made fourth, which gave Peter's hair plenty of time to grow...

I'd hate to think how much I spent. I've probably purposely avoided it, but now you've got my brain ticking over.. so roughly speaking: 159 stories of the classic series released and purchased, many of which discounted, probably to around $20 on average -that's over $3K or around £1.5K all up.

In terms of the missing episodes, yes I've considered it (this):
-buy around 20 DVD covers
-get some well designed covers out there off the net, such as:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...19366538097357
-either purchase or burn the audio tracks for these stories, or see if I can meld the stories where there are 1 or 2 episodes left off my Lost in Time DVD onto a blank DVD with the remaining episodes simply burnt off YouTube and also added.

Hmm, its got me thinking (for The Crusade, The Faceless Ones & The Wheel in Space at least).
-has anybody else thought about it or managed to do it?

I have a box of boxes, with all the slipcases tucked away. DVDs are in story order (with An Adventure in Time and Space first). I have the missing story soundtrack CDs, so those are slotted in their relevant gap too. K9 and Company and Lost In Time made me lose sleep though.

I keep all the boxes but move them about so I can put them back into their original box they were sold in (revisitation etc..) if I wanted too. For example the cyberman box has Revenge of the Cybermen and Terror of Zygons inside the box too instead of Silver Nemesis so the stories are in proper order.

I have to say I love the new CGI effects put in on the classic DVDs. For example The Ark In Space is very much improved and also The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Shame they didn't use it for Invasion Of The Dinosaurs though.
