This may seem like a silly question, but do you need an internet to stream stuff stored to the memory to a Chromecast? So say if I was staying in a caravan, had a tablet and a Chromecast (hooked up to the TV), would you be able to cast said item via the Chromecast?

You don't need an internet connection to use a Chromecast device to stream a video stored on your tablet/laptop to a TV. However you do need some sort of WiFi network that both devices can connect to.

You might be able to use a Smartphone that can create a WiFi hotspot or you could use a WiFi equipped router and ignore the internet connection part.

The third generation Apple TV (£49 on Apple refurb site) doesn't need wifi when used with an iOS device, the connection is just between the two devices.

It is using WiFi but rather than both devices being part of a common network they set up a direct connection to each other.

This is not totally correct.

You still need an internet connection to inititiate a chromecast session, even if the bulk of the traffic is over a lan.

Most mobile phones cannot simultaneously use wifi to connect to internet and act as a wifi hotspot, so you have to use two phones if no wifi network - one as the wifi hotspot (with the files to be streamed), and the other as the chromecast initiating device.

I use my Nexus 5 as a hotspot for my Chromecast. I don't have broadband and it works fine.
