I read elsewhere later that he trained on pastries so I suspect a bit fancier than a loaf of bread!

On Masterchef he was able to hit a good balance of being critical without being nasty for the sake of being nasty.
Yep, he was like that on Service, but also stood for no nonsense in a kind but firm way.And he has worked with Mary Berry on Food & Drink. Interviewed by the Radio Times: Quote:
Mary Berry is your guest in the baking episode. What was it like making madeleines for the grande dame of sponge? http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-...food-and-drink
She is a true lady. It was an absolute pleasure and a great honour to have her on the show, although she told me off a couple of times! |

And I noted that Michel Roux Jr was back on the BBC this morning hosting Saturday Kitchen Live. Both sides seemed to have reconciled their differences.
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeands...terchef-potato Can I put 2 and 2 together for one moment and speculate that he might make an excellent judge for this new baking show (taking the place of Hollywood)? |

Having seen him n Extra Slice on Friday, he'd slip into Paul Hollywood's shoes nicely on a new BBC version - so nicely that Paul wouldn't be missed at all.

Apologies for using a DM link - Cherish Finden is being touted as the possible Mary Berry replacement...
really? She was one of the reasons I couldn't take to Creme de la Creme (there were many others but she was one of them) You need a "good cop - nasty cop vibe" and they currently have this perfectly. Mary is kind and nice but, under it all, she is still a cop and a stickler for quality. Cherish and Paul just becomes a competition between them as to who becomes the "nastier" one. It ceases to be a gentle, affectionate show with crew and contestants helping and (apparently genuinely) supporting each other and turns into the Hunger Games with chocolate ganache People will only want to be on it because they are deluded or masochists!I was going to say I can't see C4 being so stupid as to do this but, then again, they did buy a pig in a poke as it is so anything is possible! |

Agreed with what's been said, MRJ would (IMO) make a good 'substitute Paul' on whatever revamped show the BBC might put up. Given the show is 10 weeks and only one (at best two if they have a separate 'sweet dough' episode) episode are actually about bread rather than cake & pastry, him being a trained pastry chef rather than a baker shouldn't hurt.
I just hope he doesn't do what he did on Masterchef and go a bit French nationalist or that'll mean every other technical is some sort of french confectionary challenge. |

I thought Val was lovely on an extra slice. She clearly knew her limitations and was obviously just happy to have been there at all so getting as far as she did was a bonus.
I thought she was a really nice but a bit eccentric 'older' lady and the other contestants really seemed to like her too. |

A fresh face or someone who hasn't had much exposure will keep fans curious but there's risks with that as well. I like MRJ masterchef persona which is quite strict and demanding but I don't think that will play well in GBBO, although Mel and Sue could really get stuck into him. |

My choices would be.......Lorraine Pascale alongside Paul. Roisin Connarty ( sp ) and Rob Beckett as hosts. A surefire winner

Which is what i'd have thought would be required.

Before the news about the move to channel4 there seemed to be 50% of people on here who hated Mel&Sue as GBBO presenters - now they are leaving it is 100% who like them!
What makes them so good is they are comediennes. They are extremely bright and quick and that is what you need for the lightheartedness. They have that combination of wit and empathy. Channel 4 need to replace this with similar. Much as I love Nadiya I don't think she is quite right for the presenter side and too inexperienced to be a judge. I had never heard of Paul Hollywood or Mary Berry before GBBO. There is no reason why we should have heard of new judges. The most important thing is the chemistry works and they have plenty of time to audition. One thing is certain. As soon as we find out who they are they will be slated on here! |

I know a couple of people who have bought her recipe books and both independently said the recipes were useless and largely didn't work. I've only watched her on TV but her skills do seem lacking in polish for a supposedly experienced pastry chef. I'm sceptical about her, to be honest.

This week then - who's for the Botanical Boot - I think maybe Tom or Rav - and more to the point can Rav avoid being bottom in the technical for once...?
