Mel & Sue got on my last nerve tonight with their silly french accents and quips

I wont miss them
Glad it's not just me. They irritate the hell out of me but seem to be loved. I've watched earlier series recently on digital TV and they weren't as bad then.

NID Selasi would go. I just wish Benjamina were here. She would have done better.

Yes he was very average, she was much better overall, and had one slighlty worse week. hmmmmm

I was on holiday for the previous 2 weeks so missed tom and benjamina going. Just how bad was benjamina last week or how spectacular was selasis bake because to me as much as the guy was a great character he really was not in anyway finalist material whereas she was. I had the ep recorded but because I had too much stuff I accidentally deleted it. This week was sort of a nobrainer on who was going so there wasn't any surprise

How did you know it'd be fondant fancies?
Well there was a trailer a couple of days ago showing.....fondant fancies. They were Selasi's I think with the pink rose things on top

Do you think any of these contestants really love baking? I just get the impression they have been practising in the week for whatever the challenge is but there is no real passion.
Jane must know what a fondant fancy looks like so why not even attempt to do them properly and just leave them all crumby. Selasi, much as I love his character was really phoning it in this week. Candice is obviously good on flavours but her one real showstopper the other week, the peacock, was heavily borrowed from Nadiya. Andrew is the best of a bad bunch but even he said he had never made much pastry. If you knew you were going to be on Bake off, wouldn't you be practising a huge range of things you know are going to come up? It is a bit disappointing for the last series. I wonder if any of them will get a book deal.
It was a Medieval theme and I suspect (from my limited knowledge of Medieval catering) that the peacock was a regular 'Showstopper' in a Medieval banquet.

She keeps being called smug here but Andrew is the one who I always think is the smug one on the programme.

Not sure if last year was the best, Francis regularly Tweets pictures of things she has produced and they are always original and excellent but with Nadiya they found an excellent TV performer.

Maybe that's why she looked so stressed tonight.
Very sad news for Jane. However, her dad died last week and last nights show (and the final) were filmed months ago. It's sad that he didn't get to see her in the televised final, but I expect he at least knew the result and would have been proud of her. (However it turns out).

It's interesting that no one will actually miss Selasi for his baking lol - Bake off is turning into being more about gossiping/hating on or fantasizing contestants - Anything but the actual baking.

This series has had some very poor bakers in my opinion.

Irrespective of who wins next week I think Jane and Candice are probably the ones who potentially might follow up with baking careers. I can't see Andrew giving up his engineering career especially not at his particular stage in life, if he'd been middle aged or nearing retirement then perhaps.

That said I've a softer spot for Andrew than the others perhaps because I have a red haired son his age who happens to be an engineer . When watching Andrew it is quite clear where his engineering side comes in. He works to the brief and timescale even factoring a bit of wriggle room for errors. I don't think he has the flair of Candice and Jane but he is more focussed on getting it right.

I don't dislike Jane and Candice at all, both worthy finalists and both have made me go wow on occasions with some of their offerings.

I don't think any of the contestants have been unlikeable. That's why I love bake off. Every year the chaps seem to look out for each other and share some genuine camaraderie.

Selasi was a charmer but apart from having a beautifully light tough with icing, he just wasn't as good as most bakers. Lucky to get through. I suspect its Candice's completion to lose.

We all knew it was coming but was sad to see the wonderful Selasi go. His laid back approach made me smile so much but it was obvious it wasn't good enough to win. I hope to see him on our TV's in some capacity in the future. He never used to sieve his flour!

Andrew's face when he got Star Baker - was so shocked! I hope Andrew wins though he must keep his nerves in tact. I have always had a soft spot for him as he reminds me so much of my wonderful nephew who is away at Uni.

Candice always manages to pull it out of the bag when needed, her pub and peacock come to mind. Jane is more than capable as well. I think it's going to be a close one!

Whilst this series hasn't been up to the usual standard of baking, I have really enjoyed it. A lot of characters I have warmed to, Sue and Mel have made me laugh and I think I would have saved that hanky that Sue used on Selasi as well.

A peacock in some form or another was standard fare at a medieval banquet, and Candice's and Nadyia's were not at all alike.

Nadyia's peacock:

Selasi needs to stay. We need a last three that reflect diverse Britain. An all white contestant final would not be acceptable.
Oh do shut up you fool !! It's a bloody baking show, it's got nothing to do with skin colour. What 'we need' is a final that represents what this program is about, someone being better than someone else at cooking a cake or making a pie.

There's no disabled people in there either - that doesn't reflect a diverse Britain either?
There's also no one in the final that wears glasses - is that not diverse?
Maybe, no-one over 6ft tall - what about that.

Bloody idiot trying to play the race card - people like you infuriate me!

Maybe he was ill during filming is what I meant and it was a stressful time for her.

I think they may have been making a joke, with a little nod to the whole silly Strictly hoo-ha-de-brou-haha.at the moment. I hope so anyway.

Yeah Benjamina should have stayed last week, she may have given the other 3 more challenge than I knew Salesi would

I felt he does not have the passion that others have. He never seemed to worry that his finishing was not all that.

It was his time to go tho.

Well said.

Being of a different race should NOT be a deciding factor in what is, in effect, a baking talent show. And would ethnic minorities REALLY want to earn a place in the final based on their ethnicity?
Where would be the personal pride in that?

I think the tasks have been ridiculous this year. The contestants have been asked to bake too many items. The saying "jack of all trades ,master of none" comes to mind.

A few less of each would have given the contestants to add the finer points.

Paul Hollywoods tasks in the time allowed have been mind blowingly stupid.

Good riddance

1. Guilty as charged! But it does make it more fun.

2. Agree re the quality of baking - we've had far better bakers in the past series. this lot have been quite lacklustre and those fondant fancies were not good at all.

A previous contestant's efforts at Fondant Fancies for Waitrose

Hello Inspector Jon. I think fondant fancies, along with cupcakes, are among the most over-rated of cakes. Sickly and yet dry at the same time.

Let's hope they're not replaced with something worse on Channel 4 - like Keith Lemon or another of those hyperactive talent-free show-offs. Take your pick, there's enough of them.

Totally agree!

I've like every single contestant this year.

Hopefully C4 will be able to maintain that vibe.

Not been a great overall standard this year, any of the final three can win as none are really consistant and come up with iffy bakes, think the winner will be the best of a bad bunch this year.
