It's interesting that no one will actually miss Selasi for his baking lol - Bake off is turning into being more about gossiping/hating on or fantasizing contestants - Anything but the actual baking.
Go have a read of the comments on The Guardian's review of last night's show. It's hilarious. It seems to consist almost entirely of middle aged women in the midst of attacks of the vapours about Selasi. Not much actually about cakes at all...

Of course if Candice had been booted this week and there'd been a thread where there were lots of similar comments by male viewers, that would almost certainly be moderated within an inch of it's life. But that's The Guardian for you.

I will miss Selasi - Aside from some early issues with portion control his bakes were usually well presented and not over ostentatious, which is a way of doing things I approve of. But other than in piping I just don't think he was technically up there with the final three.

Not been a great overall standard this year, any of the final three can win as none are really consistant and come up with iffy bakes, think the winner will be the best of a bad bunch this year.
Totally agree.
I really think the standard has been very low this year.
When you consider the bakes that Frances and Nadya, for example, came up with before this stage, today's crop are poor indeed. Sloppy finishing and presentation seems to be the order of the day for all of them.

Mel & Sue got on my last nerve tonight with their silly french accents and quips

I wont miss them
Each to their own, that's what I love about them.
I won't be watching any Bake Off without them

But then there seem to be tasks where they are set up to fail like with the fondant fancies. No way can they produce perfect specimens because the cake can't be left long enough to firm up.

Jane said something that made me think, she said she keeps forgetting that the oven she uses in the programme isn't as hot or as fast as her own? Does that mean that her own oven is dodgy or the competition ones might be deliberately cooler or something?

I do think they are set up to fail sometimes for the sake of drama. I'd rather see each person produce their best and compare best with best not splodge with catastrophe.

Mel and Sue manage to stay just on the edge of being annoying without going too far too often. People like Lemmon, and others on Channel 4, are just annoying all the time so I never watch them.

I heard read that the Masterchef ovens are often cooler than they are supposed to be - so it is possible that similar issues affect the ones in the tent. But if you had any doubts then you would arrive with an oven thermometer and adjust accordingly...

Assuming the contestants are allowed to use one. There is other naughty stuff they could do like not make the fridges and freezers cool enough, slow the mixers down etc I wouldn't put it past them. We know they keep oven space and fridge space tight so the contestants have to juggle stuff around. Given the fact that contestants can practice at home for most of the challenges and the results are consistently less than perfect I think there is some production team naughtiness.

I wonder how far in advance they are given the brief for each week?

I suppose the mistakes do have the benefit of teaching us, the audience, what common errors are and Mary and Paul then treat the thing as a kind of tutorial

There was an article about the background to the series in one of the papers (just before the news of it being sold to Channel 4 broke). They said that they (Bake Off) check all the ovens every day before they start filming. I think they test temperature and bake a simple sponge cake in each.

Not sure if this is the one I saw

9 behind the scenes secrets of The Great British Bake Off

To test the ovens, the technical team bake a Victoria sponge in each one every day.

Ali Imdad, who was the first Asian man to compete in the Bake Off in 2013, reveals: “They do that to make sure that all the ovens are working properly and no-one can blame a bad bake on a technical malfunction.

“And on the first day, everyone gets an hour practice run-through so they know where everything is.”

Back to the Portuguese custard tarts. You can get them in Nandos. You don't need to have the whole dinner - you can just buy a tart to takeaway.

I will miss Silase, he made very watchable TV. Don't really mind who wins next week, I just love the program.

Nadyia's on Extra Slice tonight. Will be interesting to hear what she has to say and if she compares her time in the tent with the experiences of this year's contestants.

I hope next week's panel is Paul, Mary and Mel & Sue, as it's three of their last series.

Next week is the winner, the other 11 contestants and Mary Berry.

My nearest Nando's is 20 miles away in Bicester! Been put off them by brother in law who got food poisoning from their chicken (different branch). It's quite useful living in a country village, it saves money as you can't order takeaway or buy expensive takeaway coffees!

Already mentioned: hilarious review in the Grauniad of the semi final of GBBO:

I have the same Neff ovens and what I can tell you is it's definitely not set up when they forget to switch them on. You have to set the cook type and temp and then press a play button. I've had mine six months and Constantly forget to press play 😂😂

So annoying when I chuck a jacket potato in and go off for an hour! 😢

I don't think it's deliberate. My mum went through several ovens and each one was slightly different, so you have to adjust. When they change places they get another oven so they don't have time for that. But putting a thermometer in the oven is not a bad idea.

I don't care who wins as long as it's not Candice

Very good point when we heard about Channel 4 taking over GBBO we all thought they will be this happening over there. With the set up drama but what you've noticed about the ovens is not a one off even Pam mentioned something about the ovens in the tent with her bakes she was having disaster after disaster despite claiming she bakes these things on a weekly basis at home all her life but in the tent she was having timing issues. We all thought she was skatty and couldn't manage time but surely if the ovens are not as hot as Jane has said here in the last show than we can also say Love Productions have been setting up the contestants to fail......

Because remember that article that we all must have read by now that they have a team of bakers to check that it is technically possible to manage each bake in the time afforded them? That they are team of 3 bakers doing each bakes to check that very same thing for each of them beforehand and then finally they let them loose to shoot their part of the show and they edit and show it to us? Well surely if they are doing this correctly those fancies should have had no problems? So yes some leeway for dramatic disasters and they have been set up to fail.

Wouldn't surprise me if C4 request more "drama" and ask for more loony and desperate contestants.

We know the fondant fancies were impossible to get right because the sponge needs to rest for about 24 hours to be firm enough for decoration. Also there have been plenty of bakes which been decorated with cream, buttercream and fondant etc which will melt or not set if the bake is too warm. If the contestants redid something or were really tight for time they'd be doomed to fail again.

And she deserves it. She's a natural presenter - gives the impression she's talking to the viewer rather than the camera, which is the sign of a natural communcator.

Not quite sure from your post as to whether you are being nice or not!

AFAIAC good luck to her. She is carving out a nice little career on TV by her own hard work, talent, gentle and humble manner, lovely clear speech, and a pretty face with expressive twinkling eyes. ( In complete contrast to the TOWIE/GS lot who have become z list celeb millionaires with no discernible talent whatsoever).

Yep a lovely antidote to the Karkrashians. Probably isn't trendy to have a wholesome image, detractors will always be out there to drag people down.
