I don't think they are the best bakers in the country that applied for Bake Off. They're the best bakers that applied for Bake Off that fitted into the mix of gender/ethnic group/personality they wanted.

I thought they showed each cake before cutting into it - certainly for long enough to tell the shiny from the distinctly matt (and the frankly lumpy in some cases. )
I get the impression that there is quite a pause after the time is up whilst they take stills of all the bakes and perhaps prepare for the judging.

It would be very interesting to see one of the bakes in real time, they obviously do not film the last couple of minutes in real time. We see several bakes that are nowhere near completion then a minute later they have to stop baking.

yes, they definitely compress the last 10 minutes or so into the 'One Minute Left' time span! Makes a good dramatic ending each time, but sometimes you think 'hang on a sec, they just iced and decorated a whole cake in 45 seconds!!'

I enjoyed the episode 1, but I just can't stand the woman with the dark lipstick. It's the lipstick.

I really really really don't want to judge anyone by their appearance... but that lippy just looks wrong!!
I'm sure she's very nice and obviously it's totally her choice, but in this context it doesn't look good.
(and now I've finally turned into my mother... )

Last night's show really was a blur. It's because there seems so many and I wonder if they wouldn't be better off having two shows a week, same amount of people taking part but give each 'bake' a bit more air time.

Candice should have gone in my opinion, that genoese wasn't cooked. I'd rather have dry cake than uncooked.

Yes, biscuits. I'd be totally undone by the gingerbread building challenge (that's what it looked like) - I made one a few years ago with the daughter and it was more like a run down hovel, it started to slide at one point and the roof fell in. It's given us some good laughs over the years but I think I'd be like a rabbit frozen in the headlights when they handed that challenge over.
Or just do what Scottish James did a few years ago when he ran out of time - just pretend it was always meant to be a gingerbread ruin anyway

I am glad I am not alone in this. We could have a support group

I found it fascinating
I wonder if its one of those things that looks ok in real life but shocking through a camera?*

*thinking about it - no, it's always going to look wrong.

Wonderful to have Bake Off back.

First impressions which may....and often do......change over time.

Favourites

Selasi - the wonderful laid back Ghanaian city banker, took a liking to him as soon as he got off his bike to reveal a suit.

Andrew (young ginger lad) - purely so far as he reminds of me so much of my wonderful nephew who is away at the Uni. I sent him a picture and told him he was on Bake Off, he said he knew it was coming!

Intrigued

Candice - Morticia lips - I think she has a lot of potential

I really need to get a multipack of Jaffa Cakes for tonight now.

I hope Val lasts a few weeks at least. On last night's showing she's not the best baker but she seems sweet and good-natured. And there's something about her that reminds me of a Beatrix Potter character!
Have to admit I was almost a bit when I saw her listening to the cakes - exactly how my Mum used to when I was a little girl....

How on earth did Selasi not get Star Baker?
I think it was quite clear why he didn't get star baker. He was up there until the show stopper and he missed a massive part of the criteria, it needed a mirror glaze and quite clearly his cake did not have anywhere near a mirror glaze.

Earlier in the thread someone posted this :

I love the description of Selasi
That's brilliant - and worth a quote so more people can see it...

I loved them all - but as you say Selasi was particularly good

The answer to the Gingerbread House collapse is to do what the lovely James did in series 4 (I think, it was the series John Waite won) where he decided mid-challenge that his Gingerbread House would be an atmospheric ruined Gingerbread Barn instead - talk about thinking on his feet!

Was it a deconstructed Barn or something like that? Genius

My first impressions:

Favourites

Selasi - how lovely is he?
Benjamina - her smile is just infectious
Andrew - what a sweet chap

Special mention to Val - who (as I said up-thread) almost made my cry last night because when she listened to her cakes to see if they were done it was like watching my Mum when I was a little girl as that's exactly what she used to do.

Annoying (not least, because least is not a nice friendly Bake-Off word!)

Candice - firstly, why on earth all that makeup and she was by far the most dramatic of those who ditched their genoese and started again. Probably all down the edit I guess...

They were really the only ones who stood out for me - the rest I'm sure will get their chance to shine in the coming weeks

With twelve contestants and perhaps two or three cameras they must have film the last few minutes over a much longer period.

I wonder sometimes if some of the 'incidents' are shot again perhaps at the end, I can imagine the backup team preparing (off camera) a bowl of mix or even parts of a cake so they can reshoot something going wrong.

In one of the articles about the new series, a past contestant commented about heavily edited it was.

I was more irritated by at least a couple of the others playing up for the camera a bit too much for me.

Perhaps its just me but this seemed to be the worst first episode with so many having a meltdown!

Forgotten ingredients and having to re-start halfway through!

Pressure is only going to get worse contestants *twirls tache*

i know it was only the first week and with the time constraints of having a full squad of contestants we didn't really get alot of insight into them but for me no-one really stood out as being that likeable and i found myself for the first time not having someone i wanted to win at the end of the first show

oh and was it just me that thought there was a bit of flirting going on between selasi and candice ?

Does anyone apart from Mary actually make their own Jaffa cakes?
Yes! I make Gary Rhodes "Giant Jaffa Cake" quite often as a pudding. I draw the line at making fatless sponge so use ready made flan base for the cake bit

I must be a bit of a ficko, I didn't pick up on any flirting, I thought they were friendly because their work stations were near each other...although now I can't quite picture the lay out....hmmm, will have to keep an eye on all this.

I did think that when the camera did a close up of Benjaminas face while Paul was judging....'oh here we go, she is going to be this years Nadiya' all about the facial expressions.

Might be getting a little too cynical now with these type of programmes.

So do you then essentially just make orange jelly and pour it into the flan base and then top with chocolate - even I might be able to manage that....?
