Interesting piece in the Mail about the people behind Bake Off
The woman who washes up 16 hours a day, the artist who sketches every sponge, and the team on standby for a dash to the shops... Meet the Bake Off's secret superheroes |

Just caught up...
Loving Selasi, like many, so laid back and looks really talented. No massive opinions on the others, apart from Candice, it's the lipstick I think, utterly distracting and screams 'notice me!!!!', for me, probably a lovely lady who I'll grow to like if she sticks around, but at the moment it's not happening. |

Sorry if this has been mentioned but I read an interview with Paul and Mary in Closer magazine and it said that the first challenge this year was a Madeira cake. However obviously it wasn't so I can't decide if they film it out of sequence (unlikely) or if the magazine used an old interview as I'm sure Madeira cake was the first challenge from last year.

As it was Closer magazine, I think I can guess what they did. |

Perhaps I'm too used to the McVitie's version, but I thought jaffa cakes were meant to have the "dome" of the sponge as the uncovered side?
Then again, the Bake Off ones looked huge so perhaps a "real" jaffa cake is nothing like the shop-bought ones we're all used to. |

The new series of GBBO has started, was really looking forward to it, love all the judging and tension.
![]() I don't know whether its just me but I felt Selasi is really a professional chef working in some bakery school or restaurant he seems too good to be true, naturally I can see his calmness and recognise this in most african people that smile and think "what will be will be"attitude, that I love but how can he be so knowledgeable on baking? the flavors to pick, what will look good when served up, he has to have interest to be trolling endlessly on recipe books and experimenting, he would be a chef surely. Controversial I know...guilty of that. But it doesn't add up that he is in banking with all the studying of financial services as well as baking the way he is being portrayed. Candice looks like Queen Margaery (Game of Thrones)/Anne Bollene (The Tudors) actress. her face...her expressions exactly like her. I could mistake the two easily. I liked that first cake of hers (Candice) which Paul deemed a steamed pudding. It looked really pretty and would have loved to have a slice of that one. Also her showstopper looked like something upmarket you would buy in some patisserie, really beautiful shame about the genoise sponge being like rubber, perhaps knowing its so close textured and has a tendency to cling and not have a good rise in the oven they should have made several small layers within the cake like they have done in previous series. But strangely did you see Benjamina's genoise she had two huge cakes sandwiched together with some cream in the middle and both looked like proper cake fluffy (not looking rubbery and close textured like Candice's), Candice needs to speak to her and find out how she managed it, they might get along well because both of them cried when things weren't going well....just saying perhaps Candice should set up next to Benjamina next time and they can help each other. I noticed Candice is helpful when Selasi told her that he would have to start again his first cake because he forgot cinnamon she suggested to put it only in the drizzle and when the judges mentioned to him that putting it in the drizzle was the way to go, Candice winked at him and he smiled back knowing it was her suggestion and he must have put a lot because the taste came through and he didn't need it in the cake afterall and it saved him a lot of hassle I think, had he done it again its quite risky because probably the cake might not have had a good rise in the oven and he would have been icing it whilst its too warm, timing issues etc. All I'm saying is because she's so helpful to everyone perhaps others can also help her, i.e. Benjamina and her genoise knowledge that she can share to Candice. |

I'm sure they had food history bits last year, but they tend to start later in the series once there's fewer bakers so need to fill some time.

Sue has hosted the main show solo before (as well as them both hosting Comic/Sport Relief episodes solo). |

Evening everyone
![]() I'm also watching Great British Menu this year (on the recommendation of some of you here). I've only seen the first episode as watching on catch up. Biscuits tonight, looking forward to that. I love a good biscuit. |
