I find it amazing that someone like Val has made it onto the show. Surely during the audition process there were better bakers who auditioned. You can't tell me that she is one of the 12 best amateur bakers in the country

They are amateurs, they like to bake, they can bake, but they don't always know what is absolutely necessary for a success and this time make a little change that turns out to be fatal. There is a reason for everything and a professional should know those, amateurs usually don't.

To be fair to Val, Paul and Mary have said that most of what she's baked has tasted good, it's just the finishing that seems to be her problem.

It's entirely possible she is a very good baker but just can't quite reach the level of presentation required for GBBO. And that's maybe what the selection panel saw - someone rough round the edges that might be able to hone their skills as the weeks go on.

I haven't made bread for a while, made a Hairy Bikers cheese and ale bread once, was lovely but so calorific!
