It's the "I've done it for years so, it won't be a problem because I know all there is to know" attitude that gets me. A bit of humble "Well I've made bread for years, but I don't know what the technical challenge is so I could fail there." would be better.

There's a difference between being confident and being smugly over confident.
Not my interpretation but there we go.
In the Dampfnudel challenge she obviously knew exactly how to make dumplings, and said so. Borne out by that fact she won the challenge.

She is absolutely being kept in for 'comedy' value, and it's making me want to throw things at the TV!
Disagree with that. Her bakes are hit-and-miss but every week so far there have been people worse than her.

Week 1 - Lee - utterly incompetent
Week 2 - Louise - bad technical, biscuit show stopper collapsed

Val was close this week but she did come first in the technical. That alone is enough to save someone imv.

I am afraid Candice is starting to come across as a bit of an attention seeker always making everything about her.

Next week looks utterly delicious and life-threateningly calorific.
Yep, I noted that since day one. Everything is all about her, even though there were plenty of others in the firing line before her.

I wish I could warm to her, because it makes me feel ridiculously petty and churlish, but I can't.
She does seem to be extraordinarily self-obsessed. I honestly think that more or less all the other contestants are primarily interested in their baking. But all the pouting and playing up to the camera give the impression that Candice is primarily interested in herself. I think she really, really wants to be a celeb, and she thinks that Bake Off is a way of achieving it.

Bad idea to brag about how much you know, even if you think that you are just joking. Everyone (including the judges) will be waiting for you to be proved wrong.

I have a feeling Paul was not particularly fond of Candice. She reminds me of Ruby in series 4/5 with her pouts, her crying and her disappointing face when things not going well

Surprised Val lasted this long. She looked like a mess every single week
BIB- me too but i didnt really wanna mention it!!

I was quite surprised how badly Bread week went - pretty much nobody did anything like as well as people have on previous years.

Ok, so the dumplings were a completely new thing, but both of the other bakes are things which, if these are really aspiring bakers who want to be crowned champion, they should be able to do easily.

Far too many underbaked loaves yesterday for my liking.

And I agree with others, Candice has very Ruby-esque vibes to her - and it's starting to grate on me.

I agree. They nearly all served up raw dough

Funny how Val is getting slated for doing the same thing as Selasi did last week. He said he had made Viennese Whirls lots and knew how to do them and promptly came last in the technical challenge.

This year's bread week was dreadful. So much raw dough. What a waste!

I've really liked Candice so far. She's been star baker, entertaining and seems very kind to the other bakers. Last night she over did the poor me bit with the tears etc. I really hope she isn't another Ruby because during the program Ruby was a pain and since she has been horrible. IMO the nastiest contestant ever.

I think I started a trend of people remembering Ruby!

Totally agree with you. I seem to remember the creature called Mary Berry a 'Victorian relic'.
Ah well, better that than a whining talentless non-entity, eh Rubes.

Biting the hand that feeds much - no wonder she's disappeared into nowhere (or at least into nowhere that I'm interested in! ).

To return to Candice - I want to like her - I think she's one of the better bakers so far, but the way she behaves just puts me off - the comment last night as she was going back to her work station for instance - there's just no need for it. It smacks of attention-seeking or sympathy grabbing.

She surprises me actually, as being a teacher you would have hoped she would know better - I'm sure she must get her fair share of attention-seekers in lessons.

Ideally I would like to see a male contestant win.
Still think the decision to eliminate Michael was unfair and wrong

Not a fan of Kate, Candice and Val

But she has no immediate feedback and doing it because in a few months people will see it and they will pity me is thinking too far ahead, IMO. I think she just likes some whine. As for me, after she ditched that dark lipstick and it does not distract me anymore, I can look at her more objectively. I'll have to wait and see if her little pity parties get to me eventually.

What she said was:
one judge is an actual victorian relic, the other's a walking gammon joint,
So rude. Is she calling Paul a pig?

The issue was nothing to do with Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood. I don't get why she is so chippy and downright nasty. Bake Off has given her so many opportunities.

I hope Candice stays nice because I like her so far and she does stand out from the rest of bakers. Some of them haven't quite registered their presence on the prog yet. With BO there always seems to be someone who isn't liked. Holly was irritating at times but I've seen that series again and she didn't seem so bad. She was just OTT in her efforts to please. Either way no one could ever be as nasty or vile as Ruby Tandoh.

I agree. She's a piece of work as her subsequent outbursts have revealed.
She was beatified on here though - I remember being rounded on quite heavily for seeing through her.

You and me both.

One of the reasons I rarely post on this thread now.

Yes, I didn't like Ruby either. I found her a bit too 'eeyore' for my liking. All doom and gloom, constantly apologising before she presented anything.

However I really like Candice. I'd go so far as to say she is my favourite contestant this year. She is far more endearing than Ruby ever was.

Surprised she had(or still has?) a column on the Guardian earlier. She even wrote a book or two about her bakes.

First time posting in the Bake Off thread! *waves* (please be gentle with me lol)

Am I the only one who doesn't really understand why Tom got star baker? I rewatched and his signature loaf was criticised (Chelsea Buns stuck together) and his show stopper wasn't as good/elaborate as some of the others (such as Brownie Group leader lady (forget her name!) and Andrew).

Same.

Now while I am unlikely to make bread, I am partial to a Yorkie pud so looking forward to next week!

I wondered if they had deliberately cut the time down in order to create more drama. It was strange that so many were underbaked. I really hope they are not up to reality tv tricks.

Agreed . I posted this last night.

It was the technical that decided it. Michael was 7th / Candice 3rd / Val 1st. Think Paul would like to have sent Val home but with that 1st she secured another week.

I thought Andrew was unlucky not to get star baker. Good chocolate bread / 2nd in technical / good show stopper.
