I don't really understand this attitude, condemning something before it's even had a chance.
Yes there will be adverts (so just start watching 15 minutes late) and yes there will be sponsorship (skip it as part of the ads) but otherwise the format will be basically the same. I didn't get into "Bake Off" until about the 4th series. One of the things I like about it is the team. Mel and Sue tease Paul and Mary, but they also calm contestants down, and chat to them about what they are making. I also like the fact that it's 1 hour - nice format, nice baking, uninterrupted by ads and sponsorship. Who knows what Channel 4 will turn it into? |

The show has no chance without Mel & Sue

Yup. Channel 4 = boned. Throwing 10's of millions at Love Productions without guaranteeing the whole package was in the deal is a massive, massive mistake on their part

I don't think it will, especially now that Mel and Sue are going.
But I now agree that without Mel and Sue it won't be as good. I also now can't see Mary and Paul moving over. I wonder if there's still the potential for the deal to be scrapped. Most contracts have a cooling-off period so I wonder if there will be an intervention from the Channel 4 executives who could realise this will be a costly mistake. |

Random thought here but what's to stop the BBC making their own version? Could they? Or would they have signed an agreement when they took the show that they can't make a rival version?
So it's possible I think that Paul or Mary could host a baking show, that would be fair enough as it's was they were known for before GBBO came along. But the GBBO format belongs to LP, and the BBC can't just make a show like it if they want to. |

Not all contracts have cooling off periods but it would be interesting to wonder if C4 were already thinking of 'buying out' the contract and cutting their losses... |

I think I will still watch when it goes over to C4, I will give it a chance
as it is the ads are easy to skip and I skip a lot of the Mel & sue stuff anyway (not everyone worships them I cant stand Sue commenting on GOT) Plus I dont like Paul that much and Mary is getting on a bit now If C4 get decent respected bakers I dont see why it will fail |

Brilliant statement;
"We're not going with the dough." ![]() ![]() ![]() That line makes it very difficult for the remaining 2 judges to announce their continued association with LP, and make it sound anything but money related! I'm not really that bothered that it's gone to C.4. As much as I like the show, it was starting to get a bit samey and predictable and if it's really a new broom sweeps clean, then I for one will be able to life quite happily without Hollywood's increasingly tiresome fly-in-the-icing persona. |

Without Mel & Sue the programme will struggle - they're absolutely unique with their cheek, fast wit, charm, and sheer kindness. No amount of pastel Kitchenaids can make up for what they brought to the show.
I kind of went off Paul Hollywood after Affairgate, so I could live without him, but his expertise and warm relationship with Mary is also very important to the show. Channel 4 - foot, meet gun. |

Re the adverts.
I didn't watch Bake Off til about series 5. The Good Food channel has been showing them from Series 1 so I've been recording them. As I've said previously, I never ever ever watch a programme 'live' that's on a commercial channel, I record and watch so i can fast forward through all the ads. Anyway, as I'd never seen the early series, I have no idea how it originally started, and on this channel, they show everything that's on BBC - the important bits, in fact - but there's no, y'know, how the pork pie originated, or stuff like that. I just assumed at first they didn't do that in the first series, then it occurred to me (I'm slow on the uptake!) that maybe they did, but they've just cut that out of these broadcasts because of the ad breaks. So, a question please ... did they have that extra bit about how something originated, from the beginning? It certainly won't be the same without Mel and Sue. It's like an ensemble cast of 4 in this programme, and even the Comic Relief eps with a different presenter isn't the same. I can't see myse;f watching on Ch 4. Apart from anything else, they'll probably add different things to it to 'give it a Ch 4 feel'. If only the BBC had cut a few fat salaries to pay for it. Gary Lineker was getting £4m a year for doing very little. Not surprised with pay outs like that the BBC can't afford to keep it's most successful show. |

What's the big deal? I don't get why people wouldn't still watch just because its changing channels? Am I missing something? Can t you just tape it and fast forward the ads? I didn't know people still watched live TV these days.

Would you watch it if it was exactly the same just with ad breaks?

They would rather lose their highest rated show than cut back on Exec. salaries. C4 haven't paid mega bucks as they just don't have the money.

Just read about Mel and Sue leaving. Seems like Ch 4 had imposed some changes. If so, more fool them.

See, we know that now - but when I posted there had been no confirmation of who was and wasn't moving with the show. But people were still lining up to condemn it.
But, for me, just being on channel 4 is almost enough to put me off. And interrupting the Bake Off hour for adverts is already messing with the format. Even if they were to have only one ad break and show only baking related products - which they won't. They'll start advertising other channel 4 shows in the breaks as well. I still can't get to grips with having adverts in "Neighbours". |

Seems to me like Love Productions have royally shot themselves in the foot and I would imagine that in the not too distant future Channel4 will be wondering what they're getting for their £25 million.
Like 'Top Gear', you can't just plonk anybody into a sucessful show and expect it to work. |

It can't afford because it is being purposely and insidiously squeezed by a hostile government who want it carved up and gotten rid of so their cronies can line their pockets.
BBC is funding allsorts now inc the world service and free licences for the old. Eddie Mair on R4 gets about £8,000 a week for an hour a day on air. You can get rich easily working for the BBC reading an autocue, it seems! |

C4 might want to but LP would be in big trouble if they pulled out. I can't imagine any other commercial broadcaster wanting to take it on under these circumstances and I can't imagine the BBC offering very favourable terms if they tried to go back that way either.

If you " Love " GBBO, and agree with the integrity of Mel and Sue, then..
Boycott viewing C4 now, if C4 see that viewers are switching off, there is time to cancel this stupid deal. Mel and Sue have acted with dignity, respect, and in an honorary way, they didn't follow the dough. Support them now. Do not watch C4, we may get it back if enough boycott 4. |

Does the government tell the BBC to pay Linekar £4m a year? And Chris Evans however many umpteen millions he gets? And all the others on obscene salaries?

I think you have a slightly unrealistic view of how much audience penetration you could get with a boycott, and how clearly it could be traced to your efforts. |

Like 'Top Gear', you can't just plonk anybody into a sucessful show and expect it to work. ITV refused to get involved unless presenters were on board and judges. Mel and Sue have acted with integrity, dignity and honestly. If you love GBBO, ( if love isn't a rude word), Boycott C4; do not watch the channel. If C4 bosses see ratings fall, thry could change there minds, or be forced to. Boycott 4 now. |

Good luck with that.

If people share by social media it could go viral. It's up to the ten million viewers to save the show, Mel and Sue have shown leadership. |

Also Channel 4 said “We would be delighted if the presenters and judges want to come to Channel 4.” |
