I thought that too. It's not that the programme is any different, but it's the disappointment in the back of the mind that this is the last series on the BBC - without Mel and Sue, with adverts, product placements or whatever that will change the feel of it.

I wonder if Candice is aware of the pouting and other shapes she makes with her mouth. If she wasn't before, she is now. At least those muscles are getting plenty of exercise and she'll avoid having wrinkles there.

Still difficult to predict who will win - they all have good and bad elements to their cooking.
OMG! Drives me ever so slightly nuts

She kind of purses her lips and they look really odd - her lipstick colour choices don't help either

Controversial perhaps but I hate the Aunt Bessie style crispy Yorkshire puddings. I like them stodgy with a soggy bottom.
!
Agree with you. I like the very top edges crispy but the bottom has to be soft.

They were flat. The thing is if make yorkshires in a large baking tin to cut up into squares you only have the outside edges that are risen and the whole area in the centre is flat batter a bit like clafoutis.
My gran used to make them all the time, they were delicious!
My mum always made yorkshires in a big tin and I much preferred the thick, flat (slightly stodgy) bit in the middle to the raised outside bits. I've never heard of clafoutis, but sounds like I'd like it! Off to google it now - thanks!

Candice really does my head in. Cheap lipstick and cries at the right hint of criticism

That's exactly how my mum taught me to do it - although she claims her mum's Yorkshire's were the best and she's never been able to replicate them - but she does use mustard powder, and they taste amazing! Also, she never puts the batter in the fridge - instead, just covered at room temperature and left for an hour. It definitely shouldn't be cold when you're pouring it into the pan.

The whole thing about smoking hot oil was right, but too many of the bakers last night seemed to just take too long to get the batter in the pans, and the temperature was clearly dropping. I can't remember who it was, but I remember one TV chef taking their pan of smoking oil out of the oven, and putting it on a hob that was already hot (although not exactly cooking). it meant that there was very little heat lost, with room temperature batter hitting hot oil in a still hot pan. Also, choice of oil is key to flavour - my mum only ever uses beef dripping and she never opens the oven door once the puddings were in. Mind you, sticking an entire roast dinner inside a yorkie would negate the need to add lots of flavour with your choice of cooking fat!
Delia has always told viewers/readers to put the hot pan on the hob to keep the fat smoking hot as your pour the batter in. It's a little bit lethal but does the trick. Easier to do with a big oblong tin though. A muffin tin would be more awkward.

I dislike them in muffin tins anyway - all tall and rock hard.
Rather use a tin like this:

Jesus wept, Claire Balding?

She's a humour vacuum, that would be a disaster.

I don't think you can recreate the chemistry of Mel & Sue, Mary and Paul anyway and that's a big part of the show IMO

Yep, those are the ones my mum has! Best size for crispy edges and still big enough for a softer centre. I've had some of the little Yorkshires that were like eating a bag of crisps! I suspect it's inevitable that I'll be persuading/helping my mum to make a full roast with Yorkshires this weekend, when all our family go round to my parents on Sunday afternoon!

A good double act needs a lot of time to develop properly, that's why Mel and Sue work. You can plonk two presenters together and they can get the job done professionally and slickly but the rapport won't be there.

Clare Balding is a bit too goody-goody for me. She's OK for sport but she's the school prefect where Mel and Sue are the class clowns.

It's the lippy that exaggerates them. As a simple man she ticks some boxes for me and is deffo where the sex appeal lies in this year's contest. And she knows it!
Good man Strakes, focus on the important stuff. Bet Channel 4 do a better job selecting a few lookers next year.

Gordon seems sot spend a lot of his time in America now and to be honest, I doubt he'd be interested in doing the show

Do you think they'd be happy doing 'Naked Great British Bake Off'? Because that's the only way I can see Channel 4 getting decent ratings with new presenters/judges AND adverts.

I'm going to try and not think about the possible impending doom looming over bake off and enjoy the rest of the series. Whoever presents/judges in future I will give a chance and then decide from there.

The trouble is that a million viewers is decent ratings for Channel 4, that is a loss of around nine million viewers.

I hear you but I think I'm going to give it a swerve.

All 4 presenters and how they interact is a massive part of what's made this show a hit IMO, plus the fact that it's an uninterrupted hour of viewing.

I like Clare Balding but only as a sports presenter, certainly not as a cookery show presenter, I would not have thought it would be her cup of tea anyway.
