I'm going to try and not think about the possible impending doom looming over bake off and enjoy the rest of the series. Whoever presents/judges in future I will give a chance and then decide from there.
This is possibly the most sensible post of the entire week.

Applause for Gogfumble

The trouble is that a million viewers is decent ratings for Channel 4, that is a loss of around nine million viewers.
Second time you've said that. It isn't, not for something like this. Anything less than 5m would be seen as a failure for the money they've paid and being as C4's catch-up service is horrible it won't even consolidate well either.

I might actually cry! I can't believe there are just a handful of episodes left to enjoy them.

I wonder if Candice is aware of the pouting and other shapes she makes with her mouth. If she wasn't before, she is now. At least those muscles are getting plenty of exercise and she'll avoid having wrinkles there.
I realised during this week's episode who Candice reminds me of, its Derek Zoolander

No ok she looks nothing like Ben Stiller, its the pout she does at the end of every sentence or phrase, very Zoolander like. I'm fairly sure its a completely unconscious thing though. Probably...

I'm still enjoying this show so much though, no one is really unlikeable this series despite some quirkiness, I was so sad at the news of the move to channel 4, it won't be an improvement.

Ed Balls? They must have him on a set fee contract. At least Monica's likely to be good...

Its been bugging me who Candice reminds me of and I finally realised its Michelle Collins. Not looks wise just the mouth area. Pout or pursing whichever you care to call it. I quite like her and warmed to her more this week. Whilst im going against the grain I like Val too.

Thanks for posting that. Love the thought of them swearing their heads off to stop footage being used lol. I guess that we will see more of the sob story aspect maybe in the c4 series. I had not heard before that mel and sue almost left because they wanted that

Does anyone know why Mel and Sue are leaving? Does it matter all that much to them who provides the conduit into their audience? Don't they work for Love Productions, and not the BBC?

Apparently Sue wanted to leave before any of this happened. Article in today's Sun says she and Mel were on £100k apiece while P&M got £500k each so you have to assume that irritated them just a little!

In their statement, they said they're 'not going with the dough' so I think it's fair to say that whatever the reason - it's not about the money they've been offered.

Does it matter all that much to them who provides the conduit into their audience?
Apparently it does. They're very much against the contestants being somewhat exploited for being emotional/crying and if it happened whilst filming - Sue said she'd deliberately go to contestants and start swearing so that the film couldn't be aired.

Don't they work for Love Productions, and not the BBC?
No

I think the debate has pretty much run its course and we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Back to now!! Enjoyed the programme last night, as always, but much as I like him I felt Ed was given too much time from Jo at the expense of Henning. Kate still seemed twee

We're discussing recent Bake Off events in the Bake Off thread.

What are you discussing?

Looks like their loyalties are with BBC not the highest bidder, could be something else though. Maybe they wanted to leave anyway, it has been 7 years.

Do you think they'd be happy doing 'Naked Great British Bake Off'? Because that's the only way I can see Channel 4 getting decent ratings with new presenters/judges AND adverts.
Yes, who wouldn't want to see Mary's oven.

I disagree - I've seen Henning on this panel before, and he's just dominated, at the expense of all the other guests, including the leaving baker. I think Jo divided the time very well and, had Ed declined to answer the 'tosser or not' I'm sure Henning would have mangled his way through a pancake toss! Besides, after bringing the world's most disgusting cake into this show, Henning needed to be put on the naughty step for that alone! But yes, Kate is so twee, and I suspected it was a bit of a cheat with bringing in her biscuits that were perfectly acceptable the first time round (bar a very minor comment from Mary), instead of correcting the travesty of the horrible looking blue iced swallow cake!

"Hunt cut her teeth at BBC News, but when the news broke about Mel and Sue leaving Bake Off, a BBC journalist texted me: “Nothing short of unbridled joy among BBC News staff, that their former colleague Jay Hunt has f***ed something up quite so drastically.”

Hunt, of course, was very publicly dragged through an ageism and sexism tribunal after the dismissal of Countryfile presenter Miriam O’Reilly on her watch as BBC One controller.

However, this deal could now easily come back to damage Hunt – as well as her Channel 4 boss David Abraham, the broadcaster’s board, and even its prospects of staying in public hands.

“I’d like to understand from Channel 4 how they can justify spending £25 million (a year) on a show that’s already very successful somewhere else, when their statutory remit is to be different and innovative,” says Lord Michael Grade, himself a former chief executive of Channel 4."

If that's correct then the producers have it backwards, Mel & Sue are the indispensable duo.

There are any number of quality cooks who will take it all very seriously, but Mel & Sue are not easily replaced.

I've read that Katie Piper could be the new host on C4. I can't remember how to post links, but it's easy enough to google I haven't read the previous few pages on the thread so apologies if someone's already mentioned it!

Nice lady but not sure I can believe she'd enjoy stuffing her face with cakes, she is too glam and healthy living type.

On the premise that all the existing leave I'd like people like Rosemary Shrager and one of the Roux family as judges (Michel Jr likely best bet although Albert is hilarious if he's up to it). Jo Brand and Nadiya would make a strangely odd couple of hosts but it could work.

They need to be comedic ... IMO. We have the serious judges ... the hosts are there for some light relief, bit of banter etc ... puns!!!
I've said this on another thread but Bake Off fans like Josh Widdecombe, Hal Cruttenden and Roisin (will have to look up her surname) ... Conaty would be good or possibly would be.

I'm not so keen on Extra Slice this season. It seems a bit forced. Perhaps it always takes a while to get into the new season. I haven't noticed before but there's more of a feeling of Jo feeding the panel with well rehearsed questions to which they give well rehearsed answers than I remember. It's not as fun or relaxed ... maybe it will be. Early days.
