I don't understand the comparison between Ruby and Candice at all other than that they are attractive women who cry and are decent (if erratic) bakers. Ruby spent most of her time muttering into her chin, speaking from underneath her eyelashes and talking pretentious waffle. Candice is much more direct and aggressive. I absolutely cannot imagine Ruby under any circumstances smirking to Mel and asking her to grab her jugs or Candice producing a great big waffling twaddly tweetstream comparing Paul Hollywood to Moby Dick.

Hahah 100% this. I did wonder what she was going on about! I have to say I didn't mind Ruby as much as some did in these here parts and I don't mind Candice at all. That being said, I really didn't warm to Val but people here and on Twitter adored her! So takes all sorts!
I think the Ch4 producers are probably breathing a huge sigh of relief that Paul did agree to come over... It is continuity of sorts but agree he needs a very strong person to balance him and not sure how they can replace Mel and Sue. I would be even be tempted to say don't even attempt to replicate them, that would probably fall flat on its face.

I think that is a near impossible task - not for the personality type, but the fact that when the show started Paul was the 'junior' judge and, despite his strong opinions, the balance of power swayed towards Mary as the 'final say'. There is now a more equal balance, but the impression has always been that Mary is the senior partner in the duo and the head judge, not least because of her age.
Now though, he's the sole survivor from the original franchise, and will inevitably be treated as the head judge (it's probably in the contract!). I can't see them employing anyone other than a younger female to balance the judging - 2 male judges is totally the wrong choice for GBBO (it becomes far too Masterchef at that point). So there'll be a new junior partner, and even with a big personality, the balance is utterly changed. They may strike gold with a new judge, but it's highly unlikely - the mix of judges and presenters right now is a bit like catching lightning in a bottle, it's not going to happen twice.
Well done to Mary not going with the money unlike Paul. Really cannot see it being a success with 3 of the 4 now gone. Paul is my least favourite too

At which point it ceases to be the same show that Jay Hunt promised last week. But I agree, a replication of the style & innuendos will invoke comparisons with the original Bake Off, and I would guess that those comparisons will be less than favourable (just as they did when Chris Evans used what many accepted were Jeremy Clarkson phrases & openings - "Tonight ....... Matt looks miserable, someone whose name I forget bangs something, and I jump about a bit").

Guessing the co judge would more likely be female and would probably best suit an Angela Hartnett or Rosemary Shrager type. In a lot of ways Lorraine Pascal would be ideal but does she have the strength of personality to be a good foil to Paul or would it be a flirt fest (from him)?

I think Angela and Rosemary are a bit too strict, you need someone professional but with humour and kindness too. I think they should stick to a mature lady who has a kindly edge and knows cake really well as Paul is the bread man. Jane Asher springs to mind as she has also been an actress in her time so would be good with the cameras,she also recently closed her cake business but said she would like baking to still be part of her life, so a good choice and at 70 the right age to keep Paul in check haha.
As for the floating presenters, who knows but I can see Nadiya and maybe a young bloke doing it as a complete change probably a presenter / comedian.

Not in the least surprised and I don't blame him really. His fame is heavily linked to the franchise whereas Mel, Sue and Mary are and were strong outside of it.

He doesn't have fingers in too many pies, so to speak. If he keeps going there's a chance it will work and he does not have to try his luck from scratch. He does not have too many choices. As for Mary, if she doesn't work another day it won't make a difference to her, when one doesn't count the free time. Who knows, if GBBO stayed with BBC she would need persuading to stay anyway. The true heroes are Mel and Sue and even they probably already have other projects lining up.

I think having Paul along is a mistake. It will just remind the audience of what is missing. They would have been better starting completely with a clean slate. Emma Kennedy, ex girlfriend of Sue Perkins has been saying on twitter today that Mary stuck up for Paul when the Beeb wanted to get rid of him after his affair. Makes his statement where he doesn't mention her, seem pretty shabby.
Bake Off will be like one of those 70's/80's groups that only have one original member left. People go to see them and say "No, you're not".
So Paul Hollywood works for a production company that sells its show to the BBC.
That production company gets a better offer and sells its show to Channel 4.

I'm in the minority here but I always preferred Paul to Mary anyway so I'm pleased that Paul is staying on. It's not like he has loads of spin-off BBC shows or anything so without Bake Off, there was no guarantee of other BBC work.
If my employer was acquired by someone else and it was a choice of leaving on moral high ground and potentially being out of a job or going with them for more money then I know what I'd do.

I think you need a degree of the formidable for this show exercised in the right places. Definitely need it to keep Paul in line and it doesn't hurt to have a touch to keep the contestants focussed. That said when I've seen Angela with amateur chefs and cooks on TV she has generally come over very supportive I thought and Rosemary generally bubbles with enthusiasm. I don't think either can be accused of lacking humour. I could see Jane in the role though. Mary is pretty formidable actually I think.
Re the hosts it is their job to counteract the scariness of the judges and be on the contestants' side. Nadiya +1 would be my choice too male or female but they'd need to be funny.
