Yes it is a naive way at looking at it, you are looking at everything like it is linear, which it is not.
But for the most part it IS linear because from a production pov that makes things far easier. They film in blocks of usually three episodes then go into post production on those whilst the next block are filming. That's how production at BBC Wales has worked for a long time on DW and other similar shows. Obviously things might change if particular outdoor locations are required at certain times but those are the exception and not exactly desirable as it mucks up the schedule. They might do episodes 4-6 before 1-3 for some reason but again, this makes no difference to the overall length of filming nor when it can be aired from.

The show can start airing 7-8 months after it starts filming. This is usually whilst the show is in the final filming block which gives them enough time to finish post production on those episodes before they go out.

Unlike US productions, the UK ones do a lot more filming before it goes to air (hence we don't have breaks) but it isn't unusual for a show to be on air whilst it's still film the last episodes. Especially when you've got something like DW that has several months in pre-production, takes 8-9 months to film and 3-4 months to show - there's an obvious potential overlap there.

If the show starts filming in May it'll be ready to air well before next May unless they're doing something very unusual with the production.

Well, I'll just add this to the mix, from a Press Release dated today:

Shooting for Sherlock series four begins

<snipped>

Filming for series four of Sherlock, the multi-award-winning hit BBC One drama produced by Hartswood Films, has started.

It could be rather tight for filming of DW to begin next month.

I might be missing something here, it wouldn't be the first time... but I thought that the reason Who wasn't airing this year was that the usual filming start in January had been replaced by the Sherlock commitments.
But if Sherlock is only starting filming now then why couldn't at least some of Doctor Who have been done in the last three months?

I don't think that there had been a confirmed start date for Sherlock filming, but if my memory serves me correctly, it was slated to start "in the Spring" rather than January.

For example:

You have to allow for pre-production work too.

Because Moffat can't do pre-production on both shows at once.

And yes, it seems unlikely that DW will start filming in May now.

In the RTD years DW filming tended to start around July, culminating in the series starting the following April. This was for the 13 episodes + Christmas Special. So there should be no reason why if Doctor Who filming starts in July, with only 12 episodes and the Christmas Special, series 10 can't start early April next year. It would be very disappointing if the show got pushed back to the graveyard summer slot.
