Just listened back to Iain Lee/John Holmes, as expected from what they've both said on their shows, they were complimenting each other's shows.
The good thing about them is they seem to share a similar sense of humour but what they do on their shows is very different. During the second break, Iain asks Jon whether he has been told to say nice things about other presenters and Jon says no. Then they talk about JHB and Jon says that the handovers are awkward and "she has no idea". The next bit is hard to hear because the studio output is so loud but I think Jon says that JHB says Iain is "psychopathic". Iain says "what for?" and then Dave says something like "because of the picture of your head on her body". |

The periscope thing is great. Were this to be Masterchef, Monica would remark that it raises the "plate" to "another level". Maybe the boffins at talkRADIO towers could install a proper webcam with better resolution and audio. That would be nice

Judging by the off-air chat on Periscope the mutual admiration does look genuine.

Back on topic - I make a special effort to switch over from JoB a few minutes early each day so I can catch those scintillating interactions between Holmes and Hartley-Brewer. I don't doubt actually that Julia knows there is a joke going on at her expense, but doesn't quite know what it is or how to react to it. Feel a bit sorry for her actually, what with Iain's current twitter profile pic, I wonder if she might even feel she is being bullied - you never know. |

Last night's Periscope is on YouTube, so you can get to hear the off-air bits between Iain and Jon when commercials are playing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF_c-ySTRhk ![]() Now I've seen what John Holmes looks like, he came over like someone worth checking out further. It was probably quite a good promotional idea to appear on the late night Iain Lee show like that. I noticed Holmes state intense dislike for David Walliams which I think also came out on air proper. That clip has been wrongly dated as Thursday 15th, instead of 14th April. A couple of further points. Do presenters like to deliberately "over-rustle" paper under the mic? At least the chairs aren't squeaking yet! That's one for those of us who listen with decent headphones to the DAB. TalkRadio has just one studio I believe. So it's kind of like the broom cupboard at TalkSport Towers, akin to where the kiddie presenters at the BBC used to be banished to. A really promising and refreshing late night national radio listen these first 4 weeks. Some really impressive guests too, and it was interesting that the likes of Jim Dale and Tommy James to name just two, really appeared to enjoy the interview, rather than in so many cases elsewhere just sound monotone like it was another media chore. |

Last night's show cannot be praised enough using words, and not just because of THAT call. Just get a recording, any way you can.

Note that John Holmes is a porn star who died of AIDS. Jon Holmes (without the "h" in his first name) is the guy. |

So, thoughts on the "Nicholas" incident? If you havent heard it its from about 1 hr 57 in and it IS the podcast, pretty much.
Nicholas clearly has a chip on his shoulder and a message to share but doesnt quite go the right way about it. In addition, theres mental health problems. Like Iain, I found the stuff about his personal life a lot more interesting than his Bank story. He was nice as pie one minute and on periscope you could see Iain was pleased with himself that he was breaking through, but Nicholas turned nasty at the slightest thing. Its actually fascinating. |

That was brilliant, thanks for the video link.
How does the double dump work then? I've always understood how the 7 second delay works, but but TR have a 14 second delay and can dump half at a time? |

How does seeing his face make a difference? When he was on LBC in 2007 as a proper presenter and in 2006 sitting in for Iain, female posters on DS commented favourably on his looks, but I'm guessing you've got a different angle here.
My own fifth form school tutor was a BBC local radio presenter, who even did an extremely brief stint on 5 Live one Christmas many years after I left. I never understood how he was able to be a schoolteacher and also moonlight as a radio presenter on the BBC at exactly the same time. |

On the other hand, despite what he would claim, Iain was actually quite patronising. He could have brought the guy completely around by adopting the 'alright mate, lets just shoot the shit' mood he uses with his ordinary callers. But it was evident that Iain didn't want to do so; switching tack into Recognising perhaps that this is what makes good radio and gets his fans chattering. Don't get me wrong, Iain is the most interesting presenter currently on the radio, but this is an element of Tommy Boyd that I wish he hadn't inherited. Thankfully Iain goes in this direction rarely, wheras Boyd did it on a whim with any caller he thought he could belittle. I would say, however, that the rest of the show was one of the best yet

I watched Nicholas on RT - he completely failed to get his point across on what would be considered a sympathetic broadcaster. He may well have an amazing story to tell, but he desperately needs someone to tell it for him. Even RT have limits.
That said, he should consider himself to have scored good publicity just by being on the radio show. I'd never heard of him before. The show as a whole was definitely one of the best bits of broadcasting I've heard in years. |

I had to smile at the dump button, especially when Iain said he didn't really know how the thing works.....before going on to explain how it works in some detail! It remains an oddity this higher threshold that radio has regards bad language compared to TV, even very late at night when only the consenting adults are, or should be listening anyway. Why is it such a no go on very late night radio when it seems the F word and others can happily go out on mainstream television not long after 9pm nowadays. Although when watching that periscope didn't Iain Lee let a "piss" go out to air at one point from his own mouth or did he dump himself? Friday from 10pm to 1am is a real dilemma on who to choose now - Abbot or Lee. Because Iain Lee has had 4 nights previously in the week I tend to think Nick Abbot deserves Friday, if I'm going to listen to anything. It doesn't work trying to listen to both at the same time and keep switching back and forth at various ad breaks. At least Iain Lee on TalkRadio has free podcasts on iTunes, unlike Nick Abbot with LBC whose podcasts you actually have to pay for. |

Personally I find Abbots sneery sarcasm starts to grate after a while so I'd go with Lee anytime. It wouldn't be so bad if he was as smart as he seems to think he is but I've heard him spout a right load of rubbish on more than a few occasions back when I used to listen to LBC which he could have easily googled first to check.

More mild swear words are generally allowed although they can also be dumped if desired. Andy Goldstein was bragging to Iain the other day that they regularly allow the s-word. If you listen to the short podcast of Friday's show, the full call from Mr Ethical is there with the f-word, p-word and w-word beeped out when spoken by Nicholas, but when Iain says the p-word it isn't bleeped out.
It is easy enough to record both if you have a computer, giving complete freedom in time of listening and you can stop and start the playback while the show is still on, giving you time to have breaks whenever you want and you can fast-forwards through the news and ad breaks. So no awkward choices needed. talkRADIO's official podcasts only contain best of material although Listen Again has the complete output. I still prefer to record my own because the bitrate is 48 kbps on the stream whereas the Listen Again is 32 kbps and you have to wait until that half hour is finished if you use Listen Again. The short podcasts are 64 kbps so if the same bitrate is used when full podcasts start, then that's an incentive to use the full podcast |

Can I quickly ask what you're using to record TalkRadio? I'm looking for something automated, if possible
https://streamwriter.org/en/ after it was recommended here, and after you set up the recording times you can leave the computer on 24/7 and the same shows will be recorded each day/week. I have turned off the option to split the stream into songs and changed the naming convention so the files are named according to date and time, for example, talkRADIO--2016-04-18--12-00-00.mp3 |
