I love the show and want to support the station, but need to get this off my chest.

I am getting more and more flipping frustrated by the station and their slap-dash approach to, well, everything. It's becoming obvious that Iain and Kath (and Ed who I admit I don't know well, but seems a nice chap on twitter and from the bit I've spoken to him on the phone when I call the show) are working their socks off to make this show a success. I think they're doing a fab job whilst Iain's manner may not be everyone's cup of tea he's getting some great reviews, tackling a wide range of subjects and getting some great guests on board.

They're managing to do all this though whilst being apparently hampered by a pretty poor studio set up. Regularly the phone system doesn't work. Iain's bringing in how own headphones (nicked from 3CR's old Luton studio) which are as the ones provided aren't to his own specification, but they're held together with sticky tape. Why has someone from the station not come along and said - right, you're doing a fab show, but can't we buy you a new set of headphones to make your life easier? Surely they can't be that expensive.

He's running lots of clips etc off his own laptop - and I heard him mention he had to buy a new charger for it yesterday. He's periscoping from his own phone. He's talked about how a new iPad or even a Go Pro would make things easier for him on the periscope front. What he's doing with Periscope is quite ground breaking and surely this is a prime opportunity for the station to be jumping on this and helping Iain take it all to the next level. And getting some good media coverage too. Surely popping out with a company credit card and buying him a new iPad from the Apple Store should be a simple thing?

And even just someone from the marketing department printing out a nice piece of card with the station logo on, phone number URL etc to be stuck to his laptop lid during the show!

Don't get me wrong, this isn't Iain (or Kath or Ed) I'm having a go at here, but the slightly more anonymous 'talkRADIO". I've seen lots being done online with Virgin Radio across different social media networks and it all being a bit more corporately branded and cohesive etc, but I can't see why someone's not helping Iain out with all this here. And I'm not trying to write it here to be all anonymous hiding behind a pseudonym (Iain and Kath know who I am in real life and all that) as I'd happily say this in person to people. Iain's got a slick show going on, but everything around it just needs to be made slicker.

Or where do I send my CV for the role as talkRADIO social media manager?

Rant over.”

Well said, its been mentioned in the other thread as well. Jon Holmes when he came in to visit Iain also seemed massively pissed off by it. Iain asked him if he was enjoying it and he replied No. Iain asked what was up and he said the show was going well however he was getting annoyed with things not working or breaking. I imagine this is even more annoying for Jon coming from Global who have a very strong engineering setup.

I'm surprised when they built the studios they didn't kit it out for vision, its not as expensive as you think for a basic setup. Iain and Kath did mention on a show about camera in the studio but said it never materialised.

This seems to be a common thing with TWG/UTV there local stations are known to be poor technically at times as well with outdated equipment. There network for example still runs via DSAT, a bit of investment in technology and doing it via a private IP network would cost them in the short term but save loads long term and also allow for better quality networking. This is where Global run a very good ship, there technology is streets ahead of any other group and there engineering setup is very good. They also have it nailed in terms of social media and realise the value of spending money to employ people to manage this and promote their brands.

Listen Again of last night's show has great gaps of silence all over it - had to get an unofficial mp3 of it.

The 30 minute chunks of listen again drives me mad so I tend to listen to the official podcast first for the best bits and then the bootleg version of the whole show just skipping over the bits I've heard before!

Me too. I skipped forward about half an hour and as soon as the sound came back it was Iain saying "Wow, what an amazing first hour...", or words to that effect, leaving me chomping at the bit to find out what had happened..!

If I were a religious man, I would insert an "AMEN" here.

I wonder if Barry is calling himself Larry because of the copycat Larry from Catford that used to call Clive Bull?

What's a menion? Is it an adult minion? In that case, is Ed a menion?

Hi, Sleeps.

I'm lovin' Larry from Watford - what a great first time caller.

All callers so far have been long time listeners from past stations.

Hello farmer bob.

I like your use of colloquialism.

It seems that this new callers only show has given some of the loyal listeners the impetus to make the jump from passively tuning in to actively taking part and calling in themselves.
So although there haven't been many 'new' callers in terms of them being new listeners, I think it's been a success because it's given confidence to people to change the nature of their involvement, and in some cases, after a long period of time.
On this show the regulars got nudged to the side and that gave space to 'lurkers' for want of a better word to take part and it could lead to others doing the same in future shows.

I watched the live periscope for the first time for about half an hour tonight......just saying. Enjoyed it.

I think the comments on here have also been overwhelmingly positive, which for DS and a radio thread should be rather heartening. How many listeners do we think this radio show is now reaching on average per night so far? 75,000 to 100,000 maybe?
