I listened to all 3 hours tonight on my headphones via my pocket DAB while spring cleaning out a cupboard. A wonderfully engaging show, and yes the tone instantly changed when the suicidal lady came on after midnight. It's a very long time since I've heard a call like that on radio.
What did I think? Interesting one this. When he said to her that he himself had been suicidal on the Saturday of last weekend I initially thought he appeared to be trivialising her own situation by saying he had been having the same feelings. Had he really? I'm not aware of his own personal issues other than an article I read a year or two back where he wrote about the very severe headaches/migraine's he frequently gets which can debilitate him. Also, I wasn't sure about his advice for her to simply go to bed, turn everything off and then wake up at 8am to the new day. As many will know, it's often the lying in bed at 4am in the dead of night with your mind racing with uncontrollable thoughts and fears that can be a big problem. Plus when it comes to morning and time to get up to face the day ahead it can be almost impossible for deeply depressed people to even manage that simple task of stepping out of bed, not just at 8am but even by lunchtime.
He didn't hustle her off air which was good though, and pass her to the switchboard to get some further help like some might have done within short order. He said he'd spoken to her before on the radio, but then said he didn't think she would do herself harm tonight. Maybe not but best not to be quite so presumptive. You can never be certain. He did his best and didn't go down the more predictable route with the lady. He talked "with" her, not "down" to her and I hope she felt marginally better for the conversation she had with him.
More people take their lives in the spring months, so right around now and the next few weeks ahead. It goes against what you might expect, with brighter days and better weather. Most would presume autumn or winter. The reasons why spring has this effect are not fully understood.
On a lighter note, after that call Iain mentioned Samaritans and people who ring up and masturbate while talking to them because apparently The Samaritans can't put the phone down on callers. I was aghast. Whatever next!
