I'd confirm with Iain if this is OK. Whilst they'll (Talkradio) will see the bandwidth used by people downloading the mp3's - by bypassing webpages no tracking information will be sent so they may not know how many are downloading it.

It would be interesting to know how the numbers work best from a presenter point of view. If I listen through the TalkRadio app is that better than listening via TuneIn which I normally do? Does Listen Again even count at all, and if so as you point out do they have analytics on the Listen Again webpage or do they look at raw MP3 download figures, in which case what radamfi is doing would be OK.
From the station's point of view, and I'm only speculating, but I would say the most important numbers are probably podcasts and RAJARs as they are the most industry recognised, most 'visible' and help create organic growth. Being able to say you are in the top 20 on iTunes seems a lot more marketable to advertisers than saying you have <arbitary number> of people listening via listen again.
For the avoidance of doubt, I primarily advocate downloading of the best of podcasts, whether you listen to them or not, and listening to and/or recording from the online stream. I actually record both the mp3 and aac streams so have two streams running at the same time. The main reason is for backup in case one of them fails, but as a nice side effect the station should be able to see an extra "listener". I consider Listen Again to be a backup in case all else fails. If you are able to stream the Listen Again from the app or website then do so. Indeed, it will be the most convenient way for most people.

TuneIn does use the same HTML link as the Talkradio App so they should be equal, Management can see that there are 'x' number of active channels regardless of what App you're using on the front-end
In some ways listening via TuneIn or the App are better as they practically give overnight feedback of when people are listening and when they're not. Podcasts don't give such data and Rajar does but heavily delayed

They had to end to make sure people listen through the official channels and through the takeover of talkRADIO better secure Iain's position for the new bosses,
The full show podcasts will likely be released at a later date, once Iain confirms he is safe and secure at talkRADIO, until then the official methods through listening live, listen again on the website and app and the official podcasts are the best way to show support for the show

Although it's a ball ache not having the great advert/news free unofficial podcasts and periscope recordings at the moment I do back what you are doing 100% for the reason given and in time I'm sure you'll start back up doing them again Mat.

I record the stream and listen the next morning, ad and news skipping as I go. I used Matts service occasionally if my recording failed so will miss this "backup".
Why cant TR give the listeners the full three hour show as a download on the site? I'm sure it would be used, and would count in the figures wouldnt it? This "half hour chunk" format of the LA feature is archaic IMO.

I subscribe to LBC's paid podcast system it doesn't cost very much and each podcast only has show content which is great maybe in time if talkRADIO becomes as successful they might start doing it.

Personally, I would rather have a free Listen Again service. My experience with the LBC podcast system was that you would sometimes have to wait a long time after the show to get it and sometimes the editing would be poor. In addition, there is scope for censoring. In the end, I ended up recording even though I had a podcast subscription

I agree you do have to wait for the LBC podcasts and sometimes it's the next day before the one you want is available to hear but that apart I still consider it a great service and well worth the money. I think it's a bit harsh to criticise the editing, yes sometimes you might get the first line of a news bulletin but it's nothing really to bother about it's not like they've completely ruined a piece of music you were hoping to keep it's just recorded current affairs.
On the sound quality again it's not stereophonic music where it would be important it's just speech radio that most people don't save longer for than a week anyway.
Then again that's only how I see it, maybe some perfectionists would disagree.

From memory the levels were all over the place on the (bad) edits and sometimes it sounded like it was recorded in a cardboard box compared to my recording from a stream. And don't get me started on the delays some shows took to be available.

I seem to recall he said they'd only get about £20 each from it. So about £100 each was quite good.
I thought it was a great bit of radio when he reveled those actual numbers. Interesting that he noted Nigel doesn't phone anymore, I seem to recall he phoned just once after Iain and Kath metaphorically sat him down to tell him a few home-truths

Any idea which show it was Iain and Kath told Nigel a few home truths I must have missed it, it'd be great if I knew the date of the show so I could hear it.

Looking back on this thread, we were discussing the conversation on Sept 21st (#1587 onwards) so I guess the Sept 20th show would have been the one. I think it was somewhere in the middle hour of the show as I was just pulling off the Autobahn on my way home from work and that's usually towards your Midnight
