A fine show tonight - very candid and a good mix of honest, more serious content and the more light hearted. Good company on my late night drive home - I love the on air chemistry between Iain and Kath.

It's rather brave to discuss such deeply personal issues on the air, but it does make it more real and relevant and is not before time.

Iain pointed out that the adverts are male orientated. Obviously there are a lot of adverts for tradespeople, for example. But I don't think you can extrapolate a predominately male audience from that. There were adverts for Selco, Tradepoint etc. right from day 1 on 21 March 2016 when there were no RAJAR figures to sell. This suggests that the regular talkSPORT advertisers were getting talkRADIO adverts bundled in for next to nothing. That may still be the case, given that talkSPORT's audience was still more than 10 times that of talkRADIO at the latest RAJAR. There may not be many, if any, advertisers using talkRADIO and not talkSPORT. Also, I think the same applies to Virgin, although I haven't listened to that for a while.

The adverts should cater more to the weirdos, stalkers and transgender people who phone in every night.

I have tickets to the Onstage Phone In on 29 January and Performance Ring on 26 February but I'm not going now. You can have either/both for free by PMing me.

What would an advert for the above sound like? I'm not sure that the callers are necessarily reflective of the listeners.

As a previous poster suggested, it's almost certainly bundled TalkSport ads.

Sorry, who are the transgender people that ring in every night? I listen most night and none of the regulars are trans to my knowledge.

There is one regular that is trans but it's hardly fair to single her out and bundle her in with "stalkers and weirdos". 😞

There is at least one, Dana. She called last night's women only caller show where Iain decided to talk to Dana about being trans for the first time.

Ok, fair enough.

I agree, "Weirdos, stalkers and transgenders" is a weird thing to say in itself!

This would explain the "switch to digital radio" adverts on a digital only station.

I still have my suspicions regarding Alan Caddick.

Demographics are a curious beast just because one particular aspect becomes more emphasised (Iain says he gets more Women listeners than the previous show he follows for most of his career) its still a minor blip in the overall listenership demographics

The majority of listeners (remembering there are far more listeners than callers) are still highly representative of general society so tailoring an advert to cater for that blip would miss the vast majority of the listenership

So those adverts for Tradepoint and White Vans are hitting lots more men than there are fringes of the demographic

I used to listen to Iain on LBC all those years ago and really like the shows on TalkRADIO now - The only downside is when Kath gets involved. She is very full of herself and gets right on my nerves. Long may Iain continue as he is trying different things on radio and is a hugely skilled and very honest broadcaster. Top notch.

Couldnt disagree more. Kath seems lovely and they're a good team.

In fact, I find her contributions so irritating that I immediately switch to Ian Collins on LBC. Yep, that bad...

Most of the adverts will be purchased as a package, e.g. Talksport, Talkradio and Talksport 2 will all be purchased together. Im guessing TWG also had a package for all of the new national DAB stations as well. Doing this decreases the value slightly as they pay less however most advertisers will take a package rather than individual stations.

Global and Bauer also do similar things hence a lot of brand extensions as these are an easy sell as if the advertiser gets the main brand and what its audience is then its sold as being the same sort of demographic.

Agreed, i didnt listen to much of the 3CR stuff but i like her a lot, she's very knowledgeable and quick and has a great dry sense of humour.

Fair enough if your not a fan of her, no need to get personal though.

Can't understand how anyone could take against Kath, but each to their own.

Last night during the women-only show, Caddick apparently kept trying to call in, thus demonstrating to Iain that like Nigel and Ken before him he doesn't actually listen to the show half the time. Not sure how to feel about that... I mean, surely tuning in should be the minimum requirement for taking up airtime?

If you feel that strongly, I am surprised that you are not monitoring her.

Here's an extract from the Wireless Group annual report 2015, which came out in April 2016. The last line, which I have emboldened, says 50% of the revenue for the new stations for the year was sold well before the stations came on air.

The launch and establishment of our three new recently launched
national radio stations on D2 is a key priority for 2016. talkSPORT 2 and
talkRADIO will leverage talkSPORT’s brand heritage while Virgin Radio
will have instant brand recognition. All three stations will be supported
by existing infrastructure and will benefit from cross promotion, thereby
helping to keep costs as low as possible. Our low cost model for these
digital stations envisages breakeven being achieved at modest audience
delivery levels. Operating losses at the three stations are anticipated to
be circa £3.6m in 2016, moving to a small loss in 2017 and growing
profitably beyond this. 50% of our forecast 2016 revenue for the D2
stations has already been achieved.
But if they are selling advertising for a number of stations, targeted at diverse demographics, as a single package, how do they allocate the revenue across the different stations, so they can work out which stations have been profitable?

If its the same Alan Caddick that used to ring up Wm's Hunted, he was always on delay as he was listening online!

I'm sure he rang up a "new callers only" show recently too. A very quick exchange:

Iain: Caddick!
AC: Hip hip hip!
Iain: It's new callers only, mate.
AC: OK, bye!

So no, maybe he doesnt listen.
