Does anyone actually like ginseng?
Ran out of lemon and ginger tea bags the other day, was in M&S and picked up some lemon, ginger and ginseng ones. They taste really odd. Lemon and ginger is such a great combination, fruity and warming, but the addition of ginseng removes the warmth and makes the tea taste like something you'd use in a woodwork class.
Why do they do this? Does anyone like that ginseng flavour? |

Surely people buy ginseng for its effects rather than its taste.

No it tastes bloody awful. I've tried the actual root several times and it's a horrible taste.

I remember ginseng being featured in an article about legal highs in NME a few decades ago. The writer tried everything, ranging from ginseng to khat, magic mushrooms and even banana peel. I can't remember whether they drank it in tea or somehow smoked it.

Caffe al ginseng is quite popular in Italy. A shot of espresso with ginseng extract. Only tried it once but it was pretty nice.

Maybe, but this was tea and you don't drink tea for its effects, do you.

Of course people do. That's why it's impossible to slurp a good mouthful of properly brewed tea without going 'Aaaaahhhhh'.

Is the woody taste definitely the ginseng? I had a Twining's lemon & ginger tea and that also had a nasty, stale 'woody' flavour. I assumed it was a result of the processing.
