Replacing an old telephone line internally
Hi,
Hope someone here has the expertise to help me. I have just bought a 1960's bungalow which has a new BT telephone line entering the property. It goes into old junction box and the connecting cables look extremely old that go to an old BT master socket in the hallway. I am renovating the house and would like a new modern telephone line installed to replace the old 1960's cable to ensure that when I order fibre broadband, I get the maximum speeds possible without any interference. I have read that BT own the line up to the Master Socket. On speaking to them, the only way they would replace it was if I signed up to BT Infinity as part of the deal to replace the line. As I am with Zen ISP and happy with them I intend to swap my contract to this bungalow once renovation has finished. They advised me to use a local telephone engineer to replace the line. Is this the standard procedure for this issue or should I just get my competant electrician to rewire the socket from the junction box and ignore BT. Thanks John Links to photos below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5b...ew?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5b...ew?usp=sharing |

That junction box could really do with replacing. It looks pretty manky and corroded in places. I doubt it will do you any favours if you go for fibre broadband and may even affect ADSL broadband.
Technically however you should not be touching it. The black sheathed cable is the incoming line and really only Openreach should touch it. Up to you if you want to take the risk. Make sure whoever you get to rewire the extensions knows what they are doing. I have seen some pretty ropey electrician wired set ups. But a good competent electrician should be able to do the job. |

Is the incoming cable from outside the Thick black cable or the small grey one? If it's the Black one then that's good as it is of modern standard.
It would not be hard for a local telephone engineer to join the cables up using one of these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BT78A-Tele...-/280735622091 You would need to replace the Grey cable with a new standard telephone cable. Then recconect the cable to the BT line box. This kind of Job we do as a company. Our standard call out charge for this kind of local job is £55. However I doubt you are in Norfolk. |

BT wouldn't approve of you doing such work though (since this is wiring that BT is responsible for), unless "the company" you work for is BT, of course
![]() TBH, we find that what we do is of a better standard than what some of the BT sub contractors are now doing on behalf on BT.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Really useful. Yes the black cable is from outside and is modern. The Grey cable is the old one to the master socket in the house.
I live in Bromsgrove but thanks for giving me a rough price guide. |

I live in Bromsgrove but thanks for giving me a rough price guide. I can see corrosion on the terminals. This could give you a crackling line. If you ran a new telecom wire to where you want it. A BT enginner "should" reconnect the master socket onto your new wire. |

One point is the line coming into the house actually working? As if you are awaiting a reconnection because of a move you would need BT to do this work. With the condition of that junction box the line might not work and you could call them out for a fault. As that box is on BT's side they could replace it. Nothing to do with which broadband service you use.
