I have blonde highlights but they are half grown out. My natural colour is dark blonde. My roots are healthy and shiny but the highlighted hair is quite dry/damaged so I'm reluctant to have the highlights again but I hate having two colours! Ideally I think I would like to go lighter blonde than my natural colour but darker than the highlights. What's the best way of doing this? Can I put a home hair dye over highlights or will my hair go green?!! Do semi permanent wash in/wash out dyes still exist as all I can see in places like boots are permanent dyes. Any help appreciated as I'm a bit clueless! Thank you

I have white blonde highlights and I was told by my hairdresser never to put a home colour on it ... and it will go green. I wouldn't anyway. My hair has never been dry and damaged with highlights and I have been having them done for about 20yrs now. But then I am a slave to conditioner and slather it on when I wash my hair.

Personally I think you should see your hairdresser. You might need a conditioning treatment put on, and when they top up your highlights they will only do your roots and not go over the already bleached hair.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I think I will have a word with my hairdresser, just getting the roots done I think would be most sensible thing if I want to stay blonde.

I've given up dying my hair blonde because it's just about dead on the ends. My roots are light so I've been using blonde toning shampoo and products to make it blend better and bring out natural highlights.

Galinda I realise that you probably want to save money and do this at home, but I think one-off trip to the hairdressers would get your hair more manageable and in better condition. Ask to see the colour chart of their blonde root tints. Kinder to hair as it's not a bleach, their lightest shade is a gorgeous irradescent, warm blonde shade that will lift your natural colour at the roots, just a fraction, but is clever and blends in with the colour of your existing highlights so it won't look like two colours which you don't want.

I have light blonde highlights with peach low lights, but alternating with just a root tint every other time improves the overall condition.
