Has suicide been covered in a proper storyline on Eastenders before? I can't recall it other than the assisted suicide of Ethel.
This storyline with the nipper being brain damaged seems to be focusing on Nancy's guilt. Suicide coming up?

That would be incredibly tragic and very hard hitting.

But I can't see them doing it. I think Nancy leaves with Tam.

Lol no! She's leaving with Tam, with an open ticket back no doubt.

Back in 1993, Aiden (Sean Maguire) was going to throw himself off the top of a multi store car park on Christmas Day. But they changed the storyline at the last minute - possibly something to do with a broken leg Sean had at the time I think?

But I do think Eastenders should do a suicide story. It's such an important issue and effects many people every year.

They haven't covered the issue since the 80's , attempted suicide they have, but not the absolute horror that follows a suicide they haven't, not for years now.

The last suicide in a soap that I can remember is when Katy Harris in Corrie overdosed.

Donna choked on her own vomit during a heroin overdose - was not suicude. Dot found her. EE have never done a suicude. Ethel was assisted euthanasia.

I don't think that they will do that with Nancy. They are making Nancy feel guilty and lost in life, so that her leaving is understandable. Also, if Maddy Hill had a say in her exit storyline, I'm guessing that she wanted the door left open. It hasn't been confirmed, but she is probably leaving with Tamwar.

totally agree - there's absolutely room for this - sensibly plotted and responsibly told, a character suicude could raise huge awareness

I'm now trying to think of suitable characters.

I thought maybe Lee Carter, but I can't see that happening now.

I can't see this working with an established character. Makes more sense to write a character in specially for this - perhaps part of an established family or partner of someone - and build/develop the character over time to tell thieir story into suicude - and the aftermath. it's seems to sensationalist to use an established character for this.

Michael Moon was the best character for a suicide storyline. I imagined something like him bonding with baby Scarlett when Janine ran off, then Janine coming back and getting custody of her or something. Leading to his suicide.

IF they were going to tackle the subject, hopefully the message might be that it could happen to anyone. Maybe not everyone would feel able to go through with it, but debt, depression, illness, long term unemployment and many other things could lead people to a place where they feel that life is no longer worth living.

Kathy worked for the Samaritans once, it would be interesting if she did so again and had a storyline with them.

If they want a suicide or suicide attempt I'd think Linda would be more likely, if Ollie turns out to be permanently, and the guilt for failing to take him to hospital after the fall eats into her.

Or Mick for the same reason, especially after Nancy goes off in a mess, and he wakes up to the fact that the reason he was putting the blame on her was because he couldn't face the fact that he let Linda talk him out of taking Ollie to hospital.

It's a storyline they should tackle, but not the Carters.
Plenty of others they could write a great storyline around.
Bobby? Max? Roxy? Lauren? Peter?...
A suicide on Christmas Day would be hard hitting and a ratings winner.

Oh gosh no that would be too much for the Carters. However, as many others have posted a similar s/l should happen.
