Yikes three quarters of the way through the year almost- it's that time to discuss how each soap is performing after the first few months...

Personally I don't watch Neighbours and Emmerdale and cannot really comment but I have to say they have been getting huge praise across the board on the site currently. Seems like they are both in very strong positions. I just can't seem to get into them.

Eastenders:

It's been an eventful few months with some huge and brilliant weeks and some less busy ones. For me personally although live week was arguably the biggest week of soap ever the quality of the show so far this year has been far more consistent.

The Martin and Stacey storyline has been brilliant. James Bye has excelled quickly becoming a fan favourite and as a unit they really work. Fairly gutted they made Kush the father as it has led to Shabnam leaving and with news that Tamwar is on his way out the Masoods are nearly gone.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Denise storyline. I hope there's more to come as I love Diane Parish. Love the edition of jay Jay and Jordan and as a unit the family works really well. I have also really enjoyed Kim Vincent and Claudette despite expected it to be a damp squib. Added to which Donnas involvement has been minimal but excellent.

The beales and Mitchell's to me feel tired. Jane Ian Phil Sharon and Gavin just do not interest me. I enjoy Ben Jay Kathy and even the offset storyline with Paul surprisingly. Honey makes billy bareable and Jack makes Ronnie bearable so I'm glad for these two returns.

Not sure why people have jumped on the Carters being overused again. Now the dean storyline has been mostly dealt with the family seem to be a lot better. I'm not a huge fan of this Olly arc- pretty annoyed that Nancy has done next to nothing in her time on the show. We could also do with losing Buster and Tina as much as they could have been quite good. For me id like the Carters to settle at the core four. Mick Linda and the two boys and to develop them all without a never ending bunch of relatives.

Overall I'm enjoying the show but I'm intrigued to see where SOC takes it.

Hollyoaks:

Wow it's really not being well received anywhere at the minute. However it does look like they are in the middle of a pretty big cast shake up which is definitely needed.

In a minority I know but I'm sad the roscoes are coming to a very quick end. Overall they've been a failure is personally say but they had so much potential. I would be happy if Freddie and Joe stay but they need some development. In their own rights they could actually be very good characters.

There are so many characters I just don't care about. All the Lomax girls. Nico. Ben. Diego. Kim. There's a lot of deadwood which will vary from person to person.

Some plus points for me. Though not many. I want this homeless storyline to be good for Harry and Ste. Trevor and Sienna are excellent and hopefully the donovans will compliment them and Grace.

Finally six months in almost and the Nightgales have really grown on me. Alfie and Jade have a brilliant storyline. And I also really like Rachel and Nathan. The others are growing on me too and I didn't think they would.

Hopefully when the ridiculousness of the GHK storyline ends we may get some more decent stories coming through...

EastEnders:

- The Stacey and Phil stories have been standouts for me. Both character-led and we have seen the domino effect on the rest of the characters like Martin, Bex, Kush, the Mitchells etc. The two main actors have also given great performances and weaker characters like Billy and Sonia have shone in supporting roles. Ronnie also works much better with her family, specifically Phil.

- Underused characters like Denise, Patrick and Jay have received more focus. It is frustrating when the same few characters hog the limelight and it's always welcome when a few of the long-timers who have been waiting patiently in the background receive more focus.

- The Hubbard sensationalist nonsense has been a real low point but I agree that the show has been more consistent as a whole.

- New recasts and characters like Louise, Jordan and Kyle have shown promise.

Coronation Street:

- The show still lacks direction and block storytelling has become very noticeable. They've brought back Jenny and don't seem to know what to do with her.

- No storyline has really engaged me; Sally the councillor was too 'in your face' for me.

- The new pairings of Kevin & Anna, Eva & Aidan and Erica & Dev are all working for me, even Eileen & Phelan but the writers don't seem to know what to do with them.

- The Platts are easily the best thing about the show.

Overall, still very dull, predictable, generally poorly written and forgettable. Hurry up Kate Oates.

Emmerdale:

I don't watch religiously but I've liked what I have seen of Ashley's dementia storyline. I liked the Tess twist although the story has written Paddy and Rhona into a corner. I like Charity behind the bar and she has great chemistry with Ross.

Too much focus on Aaron and his new depressing storyline. Zak and Joanie?? Why did they split Zak and Lisa?

Emmerdale's a tough one to review.

Basically, if you love Aaron's Suddenly Invented Child Rape backstory, and you're breathlessly waiting for the inevitable big romantic reunion with the man who treated him like crap, then you're probably loving ED.

If you find the rape storyline to be manipulative and shallow, and "Robron" make you want to stab your eyes out, then it's slim pickings.

Paddy's affair and Zak's affair were both dire.
Charity's return has been really dull so far. Same old same old.
Holly is AWFUL. What the hell were they thinking?

BUT, on the plus side:

Ashley's dementia storyline is very well-acted and moving.
I like anything to do with the Whites, so seeing Lawrence's backstory potentially explored is exciting.
Carly's story about her baby was very good, and I want to see more of it.
I liked Rakesh struggling for money, though it was resolved way too quickly.
Rhona and Lisa have both had a chance to shine.

Plus, they still have an absolutely cracking ensemble cast.

So basically, I still tune in on the weeks when it's not a massive great manipulative miseryfest. And sometimes, I still really enjoy it. But I'm not exactly hooked.

Many thanks. Some of us appreciate the good acting by all those involved

EastEnders:

Excellent New Year period with the culmination of the Dean storyline and Mick and Linda's wedding. Followed by an even better fortnight with Slater Week and Stacey's Post-partum Psychosis. Slater Week was brilliant from start to finish, Charlie's death was so sad and Jessie Wallace shone. EE are lucky to have her. Lacey Turner was excellent too, putting in a great and very believable performance.

Phil's story has been really good too and has allowed other characters, such as Honey, Ronnie and Billy to have a chance.

I wasn't too keen on the Hubbard's Mother's Day stuff, it was enjoyable but not as good as the start of the year. I'm liking the Carter's current storyline too with Ollie, even if Mick is acting like a d*ck towards Nancy.

Can't wait to see Peggy'd death and what SOC has in store.

Hollyoaks:

Not good at the moment at all, however the last couple of weeks have been okay and the Spring trailer looks decent enough too. It seems they are having a good clear out of characters (much needed) and hopefully the GHK storyline will have a good climax. It should do, considering it consists of Lindsey, Mercedes, Cindy and Silas.

Corrie:

Again, not terribly good at the moment. It seemed to pick up a little when the Bistro was robbed, around the same time Phelan and Jenny came back. However, when Carla/Tracy are on the episode becomes very tedious and boring. I'm liking the couplings though, mainly Dev/Erica and Kevin/Anna, they work very well.

The scenes with Sarah and Todd were very well done. The fact they remembered Billy and Sarah being worried about how the birth was going to go is a nice touch.

There is a full month to go before we are a third through and a little over a week till a quarter of the way through!

Gosh OP wishing your life away..

So reviews, Emmerdale, unmissable in my opinion, it has so many current and upcoming stories you can invest in, Aaron, Ashley, Carly, Eric, David etc

Would like to see a bit more of bob and brenda we rarely see them together!

Only downside for me is Charity and her same old same old antics.

Eastenders, it has been annoying me on and off since the start of the year, yeah started well but when time stands still and they put in too much drama for one family in one day it ruins the effect. They have ruined Nancy just because the actress is leaving.. something is wrong at EE they cannot keep any young adult actors! Looking forward to the sock era

Should say enjoying drunk phil, wish we had seen more of Honey and Ronnie living together! Old mother hubbard not been dead was a huge disappointment.

Hollyoaks, I have no idea where Mercedes is, frankie is also MIA the show misses Patrick blake. I didnt like marnie till fridays ch4 ep. Scott has been toned down thankfully. Also I didnt care for the lovedaysbut that story is just getting going now. They seem to have lots of fractured family units now due to all the leavers. Looking forward to the stunt next week.

Corrie, I am enjoying but the sooner phelan has gone and the callum story ended I will enjoy more. Dont see point of killing of Tony off-screen. Looking forward to steve returning. Dont like tracy and robert in the bistro, I hope there is a twist and the deal is somehow stopped. I like kevin and anna, dev and erika so interesting to see where they go and looking forward to roy and michael returning. Oh and I want a chesney and Gemma pairing. Maria's return sounds intriguing too

I agree about EE ruining Nancy before she leaves and their inability to keep young actors. I think that Maddy Hill would have stayed a bit longer, if they had given her, more to do. Most young actors will want to move on eventually, but they are more likely to stay for many years, if they are used properly. Nancy's current storyline is the first long running one, that she has had. She only got it because she's leaving and DTC saw a way to make it about Mick.
