I'd like to see Tegan come back on a Mara story. She so linked to this monster and it could be the case that the Mara is hiding in the dark inside of Tegan"s mind
It a great way to bring an old monster back. Other than her perhaps Leela or Susan. |

Mine too.
But now that River Song's story is completely over (for continuity), and Gallifrey is back, maybe the Time Lords could do something to restore her memory without a burn-up occurring. |

Gallifrey may be back, but it's still time-locked. The Doctor only got back there by chance, because of a portal at the end of Heaven Sent. If he does get there again, the time lock would have to be lifted somehow.
The Doctor saved Gallifrey, couldn't find where it ended up, which is near the end of the universe, as discussed in hell bent. This is also proof of Missy coming and going, that Clara will eventually need to go back to Gallifrey, The Doctor telling Davros Gallifrey is back in the sky. It isn't time locked anymore. |

What about Ace? Apparently she was quite a popular companion? Of course I'm too young to remember her because I wasn't around then but reading up on her and she seems decent enough?

I agree one-offs and nostalgia dips now and again is a good thing (if done right) but nostalgia should never dominate a whole season or the show...
Its all to easy with nostalgia to get lazy... or its used as an easy way to write a story quickly, rather than come up with something new that its own thing, which is something I think Moffat has been doing.. I think its very telling that Moffats first two series in charge had much more new stuff, he was adding new stuff to the whoverse and its mythology and was creating his own strand of it where as from series 7 he has been relying on past mythology (and the nostalgia for that) to fuel his stories, its easier to write this as you have the building blocks already there, and lots of it to jump off from and spin a story, where as creating something new from scratch is a lot more time consuming and difficult, its easier to write a story that features the Daleks Davros and The Master than it is to write The Empty Child or Blink... We know Moffat has had difficulties in getting scripts done in time and that he's overworked and burnt out a bit and I think its reflected in his work... he has chosen to mine and rely on past glories and the mythology of the show since the start of series 7 and fans don't mind this as they tend to like nostalgia stuff but its quite insular... Personally I don't think its a good thing, nostalgia is only good in moderation, the show especially a show with the concept it has should be innovating and ever changing and not be a nostalgia fest.. Moffat himself when promoting series 5 talked about how he wanted to create new nostalgia rather than rely on it, and how he didn't want to run into the same foes all the time as it makes the universe small... what happened to that mentality of his.. The Cybermen have they really warranted the amount of episodes they have had, have they been used because writers have had great stories to tell with them or have they featured throughout new who because of nostalgia.... Only their first appearance felt like it was using them to tell a meaningful story about them and using it to comment on other things, all their other appearances have been hey throw in the Cybermen.... Although there was one other Cybermen episode that used then in new interesting evolving ways, it was called Asylum of the Daleks, sadly though TPTB miscast the Cybermen with that other nostalgia fuelled group... I think though people will have a varied different opinions about what the balance of new and old should be... some may love the nostalgia fest... but for me with these last two series it wasn't the Moffat written nostalgia fests of Daleks Cybermen The Master Time Lords and Galifrey that most excited me but rather it was the fresh additions of the Mummy on the train and the 2d creatures... ![]() However, when it came to Day of the Doctor, he didn't give us a nostalgia special, but really changed to canon of the programme, revealing a NEW "Doctor" and bringing back Gallifrey (plus another alien not seen for 40 years The Zygons!). Maybe Moff ran out of big new monster ideas for his own stories, but he did introduce the Face Huggers which I really liked, the "non" monster in Listen and important new characters for S8 and S9 in Danny and Ashildr, so it's not all been nostalgia. The new writers have brought in new aliens and ideas, so to me the balance was about right, |

Spoiler
Had The Sarah Jane Adventures continued, Ace was to have appeared in the next season. She was to have played a high-powered business women who meets up with Sarah Jane and is soon back to her baseball bat-swinging ways, helping Sarah Jane and the gang defeat an alien menace. A great shame the episode was never made. |

If Elisabeth Sladen was still alive, I would have loved her to make a return as a companion with Peter Capaldi. Sarah Jane is a Doctor Who legend and always will be.

I would be interested to see what Sarah Jane would have made of Clara. And Capaldi's Doctor is much more along the lines of the Doctor's she traveled with too. Would have been interesting!

I certainly wouldn't object to a glimpse of her for Moffat's final series. Brilliant companion (with Capaldi, at least).
Or, to create a BBC/ITV mashup, young Queen Victoria

As a compromise, how about Victorian Clara (from the Snowmen) as she was a great character.
Or, to create a BBC/ITV mashup, young Queen Victoria ![]() The Doctor encounters young Queen Victoria from the forthcoming ITV drama. "You remind me of someone but I can't remember who."

If you're young enough to not remember Ace then you're young enough to be able to find the episodes easily online so no excuse! Watch them!
![]() Of course, I've seen every story that was broadcast between 1987 and 1989, cos I've got them all on DVD. This is a good clip that I've found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prbyQwpNioE Someone has obviously jazzed this up to look and sound better than it originally was. |

I loved the Wilfred character (although I love anything Bernard Cribbins appears in). It's a shame he wasn't in even more episodes with the 10th Doctor. He would have been marvellous playing against the 11th Doctor too -I really enjoyed his more light hearted stories. At almost 90, alas, I think Mr Cribbins is a little too old. If only he was in the show at a younger age (aside from the 60's movie).
I agree with the suggestions for Peri. She still looks great, and could play a more mature Peri alongside Capaldi's Doctor just fine. In fact I think their ages would be more better aligned, there's almost something bordering on a little creepy with his Doctor taking on just 1 very young female companion, the only other comparison is probably the 3rd Doctor & Jo, although that worked too I guess (just). Alternatively I like the idea of bringing back Romana too. Would you bring back a Lalla Ward Romana or a regenerated Romana? A regenerated Romana more similar to Romana I could be interesting (although possibly a little too close to Missy maybe). As for Jamie (or Zoe) I'd struggle with either as they both had their memories wiped at the end of the War Games so really you couldn't do it. Although, under Moffat anything seems possible, no matter how daft/ whacky the idea is.. |

Personally I've always liked to think that the Doctor's tendency to travel with young women is to sort of fill in the gap left behind by Susan (like when he met Dodo and was enthusiastic about travelling with her because she "looked like his granddaughter") which I feel kind of works with the earlier series because he played a very paternal role to the companions. It kind of makes it creepy when Rose comes into the picture though, but I just try to ignore that one.

That version of Clara cannot come back, as she died, if you remember. The Doctor can't go back to before she died, in her time stream. As I've said before in other threads, and the Doctor has also said, that it would cause a paradox, tearing open the fabric of reality. All of time and space would collapse.
). Intercept Clara just before she hits the ground (using Gallifreyan technology) and hey presto! It would wind up the Timelords as well, TWO Claras cheating Time

I never really got why Steven Moffatt never tried to get Carole Ann Ford back.
