He's one of the best acted drunks I have ever seen in a soap.

When actors play a drunk it can come off as fake and cheesy where Phil however is believable.

Why not?

I think soap actors get such a rough deal. An actor can put in a great performance for 30 minutes in a film and win an Oscar. A soap actor puts in weeks of great performances and the best they can hope for is a British Soap Award.

He deserves every award going, If he doesn't get nominated for the soap awards! I'm sick of the same few people being nominated and winning!

Of course it's believable. He has had plenty of practice.

When the only thing he is praised for his his drunk acting, it's clear that he's a one trick pony

He does play a drunk better than most, but I'm not exactly blown away by his performances.

Soaps are for actors who can't get a proper acting job.

Ridiculous but then what would soap fans know about acting when they vote for Danny Dyer to win best serial performance in the last two years.

Phil's acting as a drunk is OK, not special.
I don't like how they portray him as an alcoholic though. Alcoholics don't accept they have a drinking problem and certainly don't neck down from a bottle as soon as their eyes are open, they may only have a couple of drinks a day but sadly cannot stop. Binge drinkers drink far more than alcoholics.

Steve plays the best drunk I have ever seen on TV, not just soap, he definitely deserves awards.

Steve plays a really good drunk. Although I think the best soap drunk performances were Chris Gascoyne's from Corrie from years back.

I don't think Ian McKellern would agree with you !

That's because he already had a proper acting job and his appearance was nothing more than a fleeting guest appearance in Corrie, he didn't hang around too long for fear of turning out like Bill Roache.

Steve McFadden is constantly overlooked but he is one of the best actors on the show by far, if not the best.

While it's true Steve McFadden is the best actor in EE, he is still only a soap actor.

I think in the beginning he was in denial but he's had a drink problem before and now he's been told he's dying if he doesn't stop, he feels it's pointless giving up. I think by now he knows he has a drink problem. I used to work as a cashier and I remember one morning, it was very early about 8am, and this man came to my checkout with only a bottle of vodka. As he handed me the money his hands were shaking. Thinking about it now I shouldn't have served him, but he was blatantly an alcohoic, so I believe some do want a drink as soon as they wake up.

They are, but that is for too confusing for some people who consider him a good actor to understand.

He's one of the few decent actors in EastEnders but he's certainly not Oscar worthy. He's played the same part for donkey's years, he should be good at his job by now.

Is that not because he's "off the wagon" though, after several years of being sober and so he's really just out of control? Especially given his recent health prognosis and family issues - they could be exacerbating his addition, perhaps?

I'm not expert but I aren't the alcoholics you're referring to what some might deem to be "functional alcoholics" who swear they only have "one or two a day" but, as you say, sadly cannot stop?

No one actually thinks he will be suddenly nominated for an Oscar, just that his acting is Oscar worthy.

Awards are a massive pile of crap anyway, you don't see any awards for best supporting Binman, I am not sure why acting awards are even a thing.
