Hi all,

I am looking for some advice please...

I bought some fresh mussels from the supermarket fish counter on Good Friday afternoon and the lady said I should be OK to consume them on Sunday, but we ended up going out yesterday and I was wondering if it would be OK to eat them today for lunch?

They went straight into my chiller drawer in the fridge when I brought them home on Friday. They don't smell bad when I did the sniff test just now, but I don't want to end up giving the family food poisoning!

Should I cook them or should I just chuck them?

As long as they've been kept chilled, you should be alright. Make sure you cook them thoroughly before serving - that much goes without saying.

Remember that mussels have no concept of time: they don't think "oh, it's Monday morning, I must make sure I give these people a nasty stomach bug because they didn't eat me within precisely 48hours of purchase." If they don't look or smell off then you will be fine.

Stir them around in a bowl of cold water. The ones that don't close are dead and mustn't be eaten. The ones that close are still alive and can be eaten.

When you are cleaning them, give them a tap with the knife. If they close, they're fine. If they don't, bin them.
Cider, shallots butter and cream...yum.
