Maigret - ITV
I don't think Cucumberpatch has anything to worry about. Looks nice though..

Settings are brilliant and worth watching just for that. Maigret seems devoid of character...all very flat

So slow. What some call atmosphere I call lack of script.

Feels like a vanity project for Atkinson, no energy in anything and he seems to be trying so hard to remain serious he's just completely bland.

Very glacial pace, but so was the version with Michael Gambon a few years ago. I don't remember the very old (Rupert Davies?) Version being so slow, but maybe everything was then and we were used to it. Now we are more used to faster pacing in our cop shows.

I got fed up waiting for someone to turn on some lights. Atkinson's best police role was as Inspector Raymond Fowler in "The Thin Blue Line." This is all wrong for him.
Liked the Citroen Light 15s though. Added some authenticity. |

Dark, brooding period piece. Rowan Atkinson wooden, detached performance. The second comedian I have seen recently playing a serious part. The Parisian sets are brilliantly reminiscent of the old days. Very promising. Wonderful cars. Well worth watching.

I have to disagree, I think it's a quiet, studied performance from him. I like it.

I thought Atkinson would be good but he seems a bit stiff.

He still looks like Mr. Bean.

Well I enjoyed it. Once I had got over the expectation that RA was going to say something funny at any moment. I knew Maigret had a psychological element to it and I enjoyed that part, and the gentle pace. It is nice occasionally to have something easy to follow to watch on a BH evening.

Was this a pilot for a series or just a one off, seemed okay for the most part surprised Atkinson hasn't done straight acting before.

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I'm glad that Rowan Atkinson has shown that he's capable of more than comedy. I hope he gets more straight acting parts.

Atkinson was totally unconvincing. No lights on behind the eyes.

I found it very slow-moving, and somehow unsatisfying. I *might* watch another one, assuming they bother to make any.

To the impatient: you're right, it wasn't fast-paced. You turned off early? Your loss.
To those remembering Atkinson's past comedy roles: no, it wasn't played for laughs. (I was caught a bit by this, occasionally expecting him to issue a put-down to Baldrick or to call someone Darling, but I put such thoughts aside.) I think it was pretty good. I loved the Paris 'feel', the smoke-filled rooms, the cafes, the alleyways, the cars, the slow, diligent police-work in the face of impatience from superiors and press to resolve the case. Overall: very good, well acted drama. I'm glad it's coming back. |

I liked it. It was slow and peaceful - makes a change.
Atkinson was better than I thought he was going to be. |

That was interesting but Rowan Atkinson was so wrong imo as Maigret. He's a good actor but played it down way too much. He played a wonderful serious part in the film Keeping Mum but managed to get in a few amusing Atkinson-isms which he does superbly. Very plodding performance and a waste of his talents.
