I wonder if they would have Lewis buying Morse a pint at L'aigle et l'enfant?

In French, Morse means Walrus, so that could add a whole new dimension!

I like Georges Simenon in particular the non Maigret stories but felt this became lost half way through.
Indeed. But enough about your comment. What did you think of the show?

Roger Allam's wonderful, (with a wonderful voice!) but as he's in Endeavour as Morse's boss, from a similar era, that would confuse far too many people!

Specially as Endeavour's back next week.
Nicola Walker was simultaneously on detective dramas on both BBC and ITV, even dressing similarly. That was very confusing!
I believe she's back in Unforgotten soon, though I still imagine her as Gillian from Last Tango.

I catagorise Atkinson with Griff Rhys Jones, actors who pull unnecessary unfunny faces. Won't watch anything in which they appear..

I must admit I did not ike the previous Maigret as Rowan Atkinson kept reminding me of Mr Bean! However he seemed far better in this episode and I found it very enjoyable. It was slow paced but held my attention all the way through. The only thing that made me rather cross was the way he involved his wife, putting her in danger on two occasions. However I know she was quite willing to help him out. One wonders how he managed to get such a beautiful and understanding wife.

To be fair, she was dead in one of them!

This was the one thing that bothered me about the whole thing - how Maigret seemed to have no qualms about putting his wife in danger. Surely, he could have found other ways that ensured she wasn't placed so close to danger? On the other hand, I was pleased to see a detective drama with a detective who was in a stable and loving relationship.

I didn't watch the first Maigret and my expectations weren't exactly high, but I must admit to thoroughly enjoying this installment. It was rather mind-boggling that despite the show being set in France that there wasn't a single French accent to be heard, but I found the whole thing to a pleasant and very enjoyable watch.

Atkinson was totally unconvincing. No lights on behind the eyes.
I think this a problem with some comic actors who try serious roles, they can be quite unnatural in serious roles and come over as wooden.

Ok I am not a fan of RA never have been only in thin blue line it was ok. Agree he is not suited to this serious part, scenery and back drop was fab the slow pace was ok and made a change from the norm fast pace rushed dialogue , once in a while it is ok to watch even with Atkinson as the cop

The employment of Mme Maigret is completely in keeping with the original books. She is no shrinking violet and would not welcome over-solicitousness!

The subject of French accents has been thoroughly discussed previously in this thread. the general conclusion being that they are best left out.

Agree with you on both points.

Thought RA played Maigret in a way (I think) even George Simenon would have liked, and have thoroughly enjoyed his two outings in the role. Understand that there is a third one to be shown later this year?. If so, if it is up to the standard of the last two then I will be happy.

I missed the first one, and would quite like a repeat. Is Mme Maigret in that one, too? I liked the way their partnership was portrayed, and that she was happy to be involved in his work.

I agree about RA - I'm not a great fan (except for Blackadder), but thought he was very good in this. What some see as woodenness I see as stillness, (as Straker said upthread).

I've not read any Maigret books - I'll have to try them out.

I'll definitely watch any future episodes.

I have really enjoyed both of them.

Very high production values, a steady pace (no explosions or car chases every three seconds) and RA is good - and very subtle at times, as others have said he is not wooden but playing the part with a quality of stillness.

I think the main problem is that he is so famous for his comedy roles people cannot see him as anything else.

Anyway I for one will be watching the third episode.

Good stuff.

The that's a problem for those people, not the production. You'd have thought people would have got a handle on the concept of actors and acting by now there's been a century of film-making!
