The Last Shadow Puppets - Everything You've Come To Expect
This is a great album, completely different to the first one, I'm struggling to pick a favourite track. I know Miles Kane is involved as well but Alex Turner just continues to release absolutely fantastic stuff and is incredibly prolific. 5 Arctic Monkeys albums, 2 Shadow Puppets albums and a solo EP in 10 years is pretty good, not only that but every album has a completely different sound to the last and every one is brilliant.

As for Turner's voice, he sounds like a London stage school brat trying to do an impersonation of a stereotypical Yorkshire accent. I spent a considerable amount of time living in Sheffield and I never heard anyone sing or talk with an accent like that. |

Wrong on both counts I'm afraid. If you really think every Arctic Monkeys album sounds different you really ought to broaden your musical horizons.

I spent a considerable amount of time living in Sheffield and I never heard anyone sing or talk with an accent like that. Deary me. Where to start?? I've lived in Sheffield for over 50 years and OF COURSE Turner's accent is a stereotypical Sheffield one let alone 'Yorkshire'. Reason being is he's Sheffield born and bred and went to a comprehensive school (his teachers are/were both teachers). And if you saw his speech at The Brits a few years ago he actually mocks insitutions like The Brit School. Lord knows where you lived in Sheffield. Are you sure it was actually Sheffield? And the really great thing about Arctic Monkeys IS that they haven't rested on their laurels and kept bringing out WYSIATWIN mk2, 3, 4 etc. Each album IS very different from its predecessor. Probably why they are one of the few indie guitar bands that have remained relevant/commercially/critically successful and Turner remains one of this generations great songwriters. Incredible live act as well. It's back to the drawing with that theory of yours, matey. |

I've got pretty broad musical taste, thanks for your concern though, my 160Gb iPod is getting pretty full and has a large range of music from every decade back to the 50s. I can't see how you can say the albums aren't different, you can pick a random song from each album and they're all different, from "Mardy Bum" to "Brianstorm" to "Dance Little Liar" to "Black Treacle" to "Arabella". I'd say if you can't see a difference on each album then you need to broaden your musical horizons because listening to each album you should be able to spot distinctly different influences on each one. |

Nice one. Put it down to advanced years/tiredness/heck, even early onset. What I meant to say: His PARENTS are/were both teachers.

Arctic Monkeys albums do all sound completely different. I'm struggling to think of a mainstream band who have managed to release such musically different albums.

Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Blur, but I'm not sure how current you mean. |

they've got a sound and style that people like so they've stuck with it, and the end result is a decent album |

it sounds pretty similar to me. it's not like it's a techno album and the last one was a rock n roll album and the previous was hip hop
they've got a sound and style that people like so they've stuck with it, and the end result is a decent album It's got a different overall sound to me. The first album was very 1960s Scott Walker, Ennio Morricone, Lee Hazlewood, very obvious influences. The new one seems a lot more soul influenced, Turner himself said they'd been listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes. It's got a lot more darker tracks and I think there's even a bit of an 80s pop influence on there. There's nothing on the first album that sounds remotely like the title track, She Does The Woods or Bad Habits for a start. The only track that I think you could slot onto the first album would be Aviation, put any of the others on there and I think they'd seem out of place. |

What is it with people's knowledge of this band/Arctic Monkeys in this thread? We have one who seems to think Alex Turner went to a London stage school and puts on a mock Yorkshire accent and now we have another who believes TLSP have made 3 albums. It's actually hilarious.
To ba fair, this old fool had made a small but not exactly insignificant contribution to the hilarity by suggesting Alex's teachers were/are, err, teachers.

He's from High Green which is near Barnsley, Barnsley has a stronger accent than Sheffield so that might be the reason.
Or he might be exaggerating the accent a bit being solidly middle-class. |

People from High Green DO NOT talk with anything even approaching a Barnsley accent! Even though the 2 places aren't a million miles apart the Barnsley accent is completely distinct and even has its own vocabulary. And just because his parents are teachers does not make him middle class at all (OK, he's rich now but is 'class' judged by wealth alone?). Although he lived on a nice enough estate High Green is extremely 'rough' in places.

My fella is huge fan.
He saw them in a gig last week in Brighton, was blown away and loves the album. Thinks Alex Turner is the best front man he's seen in a long time. |

She Does The Woods is fantastic. There's not a single song on the album that I dislike. Even Bad Habits has grown on me.
Also, the bonus track The Bourne Identity should be on the main tracklist. It's my second favourite song on the album! |

Sometimes when Northerners move to London they exaggerate their accent to sound more authentic and working class. Sheffield's produced some great singers such as Phil Oakey, Joe and Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley but none of them have felt the need to put on an exaggerated Yorkshire accent so it's a mystery why Turner feels the need to. Of course none of this would matter if Turner could actually come up with intelligent, modern and innovative music but for me The Arctic Monkeys is little more than generic "landfill indie" and The Last Shadow Puppets is generic "landfill indie" with gratuitous horns and strings tacked on. It sounds like Alex Turner has never listened to any records made after 1978! |

The poster concerned (me!) actually said Alex Turner sounds like a London stage school brat doing a comedy Yorkshire accent, not that he went to a London stage school.

They were absolutely fantastic in Sheffield on Sunday, probably my gig of the year so far. Even Bad Habits was amazing live and Alex's vocals on Sweet Dreams TN were fantastic. Quote:

With regards the accent thing, not everyone from Sheffield sounds the same, there are varying degrees of accent, I've mates from the same place who are as broad as they come and some who barely have an accent. Funny you should mention Jarvis Cocker, he's actually my favourite ever artist (Pulp are my favourite band if I'm pushed to pick one). Just out of interest, if Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets are so rubbish, who should we be listening to? |

And if his parents are teachers then that does make him middle-class as teaching is a middle-class profession. |
