According to this article, the 97 episodes that are thought to be missing, have apparently been found, but the BBC are refusing to release them.

If this is true, then the serial that I'm most looking forward to seeing is The Evil of the Daleks. I've got the CD of this story, and the end battle sounds awesome. But I would love to see the big scene properly.

What do you think? Do you believe this story to be true?

Sorry, if this has been mentioned on here before, but I haven't seen a thread that mentions it. Only that Marco Polo may have been found in the last year or so.

When your source is actually 'tinfoiltheories' then I'm less than convinced

Tin Foil Fan Theories? I think a major clue to the veracity of this story is in the website address!
It's utter nonsense of course. A nicely put together spoof. But I wonder how many people will repost it thinking it to be 'genuine'...

Personally I loved all the stuff about how the BBC won't release these episodes to avoid people copying the events shown...

As a public broadcaster, the BBC must act responsibly. Some of the episodes are just too exciting for public consumption and may result in deaths or mass panic...
Underwater Menace 2 features the insane Professor Zaroff who turns helpless prisoners into fish-people. If the BBC released the episode and anyone watching was inspired to copy Zaroff's experiments and create their own army of fish-people, the BBC would be liable!

Brilliant stuff. And the line about the shadowy cabal of ex-Who Script Editors? That really made me laugh.

Did you actually read the article? It doesn't deserve to be called an article, it is legitimately a theory. Not even a source in sight.

It is actually camp fire talk. "Thankfully, secret sources have leaked information to superfans"

Really? Here the funniest things sometimes.

That was funny stuff. The actors who played The Myrka indeed! And Planet of the Giants episode four making it 98 episodes. And the BBC wondering if they could get a soundtrack of Marco Polo somewhere...

It's not even a theory, Sam. It's a spoof, a p*sstake, all made up, and the writers will be very amused by anyone who takes it seriously.

I, for one, am convinced.

Have written to the BBC demanding they explain themselves.

Me too, except i am writing about what a shocking business decision it would be to withhold the episodes.

Sadly it's most unlikely the vast majority of 97 missing episodes will turn up, especially the Dalek ones as didn't Terry Nation restrict their sale abroad as he wanted to commercially exploit his creation?

They might not have aired in Australia but thought Power aired in Africa.

You are joking, right? It's so hard to tell on this forum sometimes!
This is clearly a spoof article, and it's over a year old, so please tell me you haven't really written to the BBC....

According to Wikipedia
The Australian copies of Power were returned and junked in June 1975. Only two other countries purchased the story due to the restriction on Dalek sales by the Nation estate in 1968, these were New Zealand which sent its copy to Singapore in 1972. Singapore say they do not possess any copies.

I love that thread. Every time I see it's been resuscitated, my heart skips a little - "maybe ... just maybe this time the rumour's turning out to have some truth in it!". I think you should resurrect it simply to give us a bit of hope!

Alas, no truth to be found in any article that refers to the Daily Mail's "highly trained journalists", although I did find it an entertaining read.

I don't doubt there are more missing episodes out there hidden somewhere in the world that have yet to be found... but I think it's safe to say some episodes are lost forever and really will never be found.

Was a fun read though... I enjoyed the bit about the Myrka's actors.

Weren't the actors who played the Myrka the same ones who played Dobbin the pantomime horse in Rentaghost?

edit: yes - John Asquith and William Perrie

According to Wikipedia
I suppose they could have always copied them.
