The animal charity say they are now re-housing more cats than dogs for the first time ever.
In 2015, Battersea Dogs and Cats home rehoused 800 more cats than dogs. This was the first time in its 154-year history that this has happened. And this doesn’t seem to be a one off either as 200 more cats than dogs have been rehomed so far in 2016.

The charity thinks its Cat Takeover campaign in 2013, which encouraged people to adopt cats, has contributed to the changed. But they also think the internet has played its part, with videos and pictures of cats proving more popular than selfies a couple of years ago

Good news?

Well you can interpret it in a number of ways I guess. Personally I would be concerned by a spike in rehoming.

This just their next step in taking over the Earth and becoming our supreme overlords.

I would say in cities it is becoming more common due to life styles and space etc At home in the country we had a dog and my Mum still does and I would love a dog now but with my working hours and a flat etc it would be unfair of me to have a dog which had to be couped up all day and me not being able to be sure to get home at certain time to take it for walks. I have cats , indoor ones, the first one had some issues so had to be indoor and then I got her sister from the same mum and dad cat the next litter for company for her and they are as happy as larry and if I am late they are ok, they have access to dried food when I am out and their water fountain and loads of toys.

So I can see why in cities especially cats may be more popular these days.

There are a couple who skulk around here who could do with a home.

I love dogs and always had one up until our last one in 2007. We have a rescue cat now. If you miss having a dog because of working long hours a cat is a good substitute. You can stroke them and pick them up and groom them. You don't have to worry about rushing home to let them out for the toilet, walking them and worry about them howling/barking disturbing neighbours.

Dogs love humans and will always be and forever are man's best friend. Cats are cute and all and have some cute traits, but a cat will sit back and drink margarita while you are being murdered or if something horrible might happen to you while a dog will always always try to help you even if it means giving his own life.

So there's really no debate here, Dogs!

Thank you

So you can die happy in the knowledge that your treasured pet is dying with you, rather than living a long and happy life.

To be fair, cats love humans aswell and can be very loyal. I guess people are generally just either a cat person or a dog person, but both are great animals.

Oh dear. So, so, so very wrong (see above link).

Plenty stories to disprove everything you just said.

Also my neighbour tells me my cat pops out and sits at the gate for me at the same time each evening, and if I don't come home at the expected time she heads back indoors. If she is indoors when I get in she runs to the hallway vocalising her greeting.

I feed a stray and he's so adorable he rubs his little forehead into mine to show affection then flops to the floor and rolls around as part of his little performance it's so cute!

He shows up outside my door constantly and the majority of the time he doesn't even want anything to eat so I'd like to think he has some affection for me... and when he's hungry after giving him his proper food I feed him treats 1 by 1 straight into his mouth, he's so gentle with his teeth!

I can only assume you haven't read all the posts in this thread because there are links to stories that disprove the nonsense that cats never care about their human families.

I think its safe to say this cat was very protective.

In my experience people who don't particularly like cats tend to spout ill-informed and frankly laughable 'facts' about their natures.

You should see some of the comments there have been in the general discussion forum about cats over the years. It's always the same old rubbish about cats supposedly being evil and not capable of love

I was brought up with both dogs and cats. I have a cat who is very doggie like, part Burmese. I cant have a dog due to my work but would love to. I'd love to have both.

The phrase 'mans best friend' isn't just based on popularity.
Dogs show unconditional love for their owner/family, cats also show unconditional love....for themselves!

EDIT: Jokes already been made, should have read the thread first.

When our cat was alive he was more like a dog than a cat.

He would sit on the wall at the back of our house so he could watch the road and then, when I drove past going home, he would jump down and run along the pavement to follow me home. If we were out for a walk he woulds jump down and walk home with us.

Two of our neighbours had dogs and they both said, quite separately, that our cat used to sit in their gardens with their dogs when they were close to the end. They were both very surprised to see it and for it to happen twice is quite remarkable really.

I love cats and dogs its owners that are the problem in most cases. I can see why cats are more popular of seem to be flat here has 7 ! Another has 5 and 3.

We have most dogs just one and a half. So just looking at local area cats are outnumbering dogs.

This ^^

My sister's dog is as fickle as they come. Would love anyone that feeds him & gives him a stroke.

My cat only responds to me and my other half, has a mistrust of anyone else, she is fiercely loyal.

Has anyone read any of James Bowen's books A Street Cat Named Bob? He's definitely a cat person. Bob is an intelligent cat

Hasn't a film been made of that? Apart from the potential nuisance of cats soiling in neighbours' gardens, cats are a lot quieter and easier for neighbours to live with than barking dogs..
