I like my friend's cat but I would be uncomfortable owning one myself due to the damage they do to wildlife e.g small birds and rodents.

It's in their nature to hunt of course, and that cannot be helped, but for me it wouldn't be a reasonable trade off just so I could have a fluffy pet.
Much rather have a dog

The communal gardens where my late mum lived, used to be an oasis for birds..

Unfortunately, one cat became two, then three, then four and more.

They soon began fighting with each other.. scared off the birds and chased after squirrels..

i did manage to spot a Scottish wildcat from her kitchen window over a two day period in August 2013.. It was stunning.. Wish I took a picture of that sighting, considering it was in Glasgow..

Anyway..

This story does not surprise me..

Sadly I think it very, very unlikely it was a wildcat - they are nearly extinct and the only colonies, as far as I'm aware, are in the remote highlands. More likely it was a big tabby feral cat.

Heard this guy on the Today program this morning. I think in a global sense he has a point, especially in places like Australia and New Zealand. But he was over-egging it to say the same should apply in the UK - as was well demonstrated by the speaker they had on afterwards. (It was about 8:20 to 8:30 if you want to listen on iPlayer).

its size and the markings on its coat (head, body and tail) match pictures of the Scottish wildcat.. it never came back on the third day which is why i regret not filming it on my ipad when i had the opportunity..

I think the only real difference an amature can spot is the tail - wildcat is bushy at the end, domestic cat narrows to a point. The coat is pretty much the same as a tabby.
There are lots of cross breeds though - thats why the true wildcat is pretty much gone, too much interbreeding for those left to be considered wildcat rather than domestic.

Hi,

The thread seems to have evolved into "cats kill things, so they are horrible" but that wasn't the point of the thread.

The Beast was a prolific hunter, I didn't like it, but that is what cats do, equally he would snarf them down, which squares the circle for me, as it is in line with my view that if we want to eat meat it has to be killed, but we should eat it all of it (I love offal, all of it) and not just kill for the hunt, or eat the nice looking bits.

And If we want to get into bad traits, I haven't seen a news report recently about a cat savaging anyone to death.

But back to the thread theme, although I tend to anthromophosis (sp) but...

We both miss each other; If I worked way for a few days, I am told he used to wait on the driveway at night for me, and he would have a temporary hump with me when I finally came home

We have our bash faces thing, which he doesn't do with anyone else.

If the OH is holding him, and I come into the room, he will want to come to me.

There is a bond, whether his little feline brain sees it as friendship, who knows
