I currently have a 4KTV (2D) and a 1080p 3D projector. I use a Neet 2x1 HDMI splitter to output my PS4 to both devices. It can do so simultaneously if required.

The picture quality is perfect.

However, I do have an issue. The PS4 is not recognising the projector as a 3D device and therefore won't play 3D content.

Likewise, the PS4 doesn't recognise the TV as being 4K and therefore won't output in 4K when using the PlayMemories app.

I am assuming this is because, in each case, the PS4 is detecting the non-compliment display and therefore refusing to play nice with the other one.

My question is, if I get a HDMI matrix instead (which you switch by remote and presumably means only 1 input and 1 output are linked at a time) will I get around this issue?

Thanks.

Does the splitter support 4k and have EDID management for passing 3D?

If not then the splitter will just pass supported resolutions ie. 720/1080i/1080p.

I suspect the issue is that you are feeding the exact same signal to two different displays so both will have to have exactly the same settings. It is theoretically possible that the splitter is interrogating each device independently and finding a common set-up that both support and then spoofing this to the PS4. Not sure if it is that intelligent but it is a possibility.

There is a chance that a switch unit that feeds only one display device at a time will get over this. And if you want 4k make sure the specs say the switch can handle 4k. The electronics inside the switch have to be able to cope with the data bandwidth required, fairly obviously.

For example

That unit gives you four inputs to two outputs so you could hook up other kit to it to feed the projector and TV if you wanted.

I use this one as my pj is 3d and my tv isn't and it works fine:

There's a bit of a delay while the handshaking is going on, but I don't think there's anything you can do about that!

It seem so, yes.

As an experiment, I just disconnected the TV cable from the splitter and repowered all the kit. The 3D between the PS4 and PJ then works fine through the splitter, so I'm pretty sure there's a conflict there.

Thanks for that. That's the one is been looking at.

That's another option then. Thanks for that, I'll take a close look at them.

It is my understanding a dual output splitter will only pass the lowest signal compatible to both screens connected - so in your case it will ignore 4k and 3D and just pass 1080p.

I expected this to be a thread about one if the terms the Daily Mail etc use to describe unemployment.

Makes sense. Hopefully a proper matrix will solve the issue.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Just thought I'd come back and leave an update for anyone that stumbles across this thread with the same issues.

Got a Neet 4x2 HDMI matrix yesterday and everything's now working well. The PS4 recognises the 4K TV and the 3D projector and now outputs accordingly.

I thought (stupidly, perhaps) to have a little experiment and see what happened when the PS4 was outputting to both displays simultaneously. Predictably it threw a wobbly and refused to send out anything other than vanilla 1080p. At least it goes some way to conform what the problem was in the first place.

One issue I did hit though was some remote clash. Pressing Home or some number keys on my Humax Freesat was causing the matrix to change inputs. Thankfully, changing the remote profile on the Humax is real simple and everything's now working perfectly. (Hold down OK + 0 for 5 second and pick a new profile for anyone interested)

Thanks again everyone that helped.
