I thought it was interesting but what undermined it for me was that a guy like this would never become Pope. It would have been more appropriate to have such a character as a troublesome Roman Emperor.
We have not seen how he was elected yet . There were heavy hints that the conclave to elect him was rigged its clear this will be revealed . I loved it though would not have cast the wooden Law in the role .

Thought it was brilliant, different, anbd required some attention not just staring into mid space and watching pictures go by. Think it has real potential to be a good series.

It actually benefits from a second viewing !!
Watched it on my own and later on OH expressed interest, so re-watched it. Thought it was kind of bonkers first time but with potential. I actually properly enjoyed it second time and looking forward to second episode.

Brian.

Question: Would a complete a'hole be allowed to become Pope?!!
Depends on your point of view really. Some people would say it has happened numerous times already.

Offensive . Why they won't make film about prophet Muhammad for once?

I think you know the answer to this, and are being provocative, but in case you've been living under a rock for the last few years...
There's the risk of upsetting some factions by visually depicting Muhammad. There was the little matter of a Dutch cartoon a few years ago which didn't go down too well.

I didn't that far! I had a look for about five minutes and soon realised it wasn't for me when I saw Jude Law who is just a "pretty" face and can't act for toffee!

At first I wasn't sure about it, but then it grew on me. It's an interesting undertaking.
By the end of the first episode, I hated Jude Law's character, not sure if he is an egotistical madman or simply very devout.
I have yet to watch the second episode.

Anne Mensah (drama commissioner (?) at Sky) was doing a talk yesterday and she said that when they think about shows they know that they won't be for everyone - they try and choose things that people who love them will really love (after all, people are paying for them). She cited this one as an example of this - it won't be to everyone's tastes but hopefully those who do watch it will really enjoy it. Seems like this thread reinforces that view!

Just discovered this is available on Sky Atlantic catchup to download in UHD. Wow what a difference in picture quality.

It does seem to desperately want to be a cult show, not sure if it's a drama with comedic elements or a black comedy with serious bits.

Me too. I watched the first ep. and I have yet to discover what the show is about - what's it for? Does it tell a story (y'know: with a conclusion). Is it just another soap (a story that doesn't have a conclusion until the ratings fall and the production company decides to wind it up)?

These things matter to me. I won't watch soaps but I will watch a story.
Also, I didn't particularly like any of the characters, so I won't miss not seeing them in the future.
While the production is clearly very well done, that alone doesn't make anything worth spending time on. I can't say I'm bothered about watching any more. I'll keep them in case it picks up (tho' it would have to get a lot, lot, better).

We got ten minutes into the 2nd episode then called it a day. Deleted from the planner. So much potential but far too clever for its own good.

Have to disagree. I have never been a fan, but he is vg in this, and has been in other things. An Olivier or Burton, maybe not. But to say he cant act is unfair and wrong.

Superb series - very, very cleverly filmed and put together and brilliantly acted.

Can you tell I like it?

I can't help feeling that something very dark happened in the young Pope's past and he's cooking up a stormy revenge. It wouldn't surprise me if he burned the house down.

i'm enjoying it but i have to concentrate when i'm watching it & i definitely couldn't binge watch it. loved the opening scene of the first episode with no talking for about ten minutes, it made me take notice. i want to see what type of Pope he turns out to be and especially want to see what happened in the conclave.

Can someone tell me - are the Italian language parts supposed to have English subtitles? I am watching via 'alternative' methods and nothing appears unless I choose to have the entire thing subtitled.
