I wouldn't mind seeing a serious political storyline. Not like the awful embarrassing sitcom set up they have with Sally in Corrie.

Tina Carter would really shine in a hard hitting gritty EastEnders plot that shows the dangers of spontaneous combustion amongst the imbecile community.

Yep, never been done before.

He can have a relationship with someone in the closet which will be so exciting and different for the fans.

I'd love to see a soap - any of them - show the balls that Eastenders and Brookside did in the eighties, with any kind of a story about what's really going on with, oh I don't know, it's not like the Tories have left anything to cover, the bedroom tax, the zero hour contract explosion, the attacks on people with disabilities, the endless, endless 'foreigners coming here, taking our jobs' in the press, the incessant attacks on unions - before he was an inter-marriage rapist, nasty piece of work, Bobby Grant was superb in that role - the job centres (allegedly) deliberately changing appointments times with job seekers and not telling them, and the huge increase in homelessness. Eastenders did that story very well with Aidan and Mandy if I remember.
If the BBC are going to continue to be attacked as 'left wing' they may as well start acting like it.

How about a solvent abuse story line involving kids? It's cheap, easy to get hold of and inhaling it can be dangerous, it does kill.

Exactly. Right now the soaps are burying their head in the sand when it comes to politics and current affairs.

They could at least try to portray the effects of long term unemployment.

Absolutely. Something as simple as that. They've done it in the past. Damon Grant on Brookside with his YTS problems, and Eastenders with Arthur and his breakdown in the eighties. Both brilliantly done too. And it wasn't like they had a nice, cuddly government in charge to put pressure on them not to broadcast these issues. The current situation suggests either you're right and they're burying their heads in the sand, they simply dont bother with real issues any more, or they're scared to. Now why would that be I wonder....God I sound like a bloke in a town centre with a sandwich board and megaphone. 😄

My theory is that they assume the public want escapism instead, maybe they're right. Who knows?

It would certainly make a nice change from the endless affairs and pregnancies however.

What an amazing post, they need to tack issues like you have daid to reflect the real world we live in. I love 80's EE as its true to the time it was set in. We need to make our soaps reflect the 21st Century but the BBC are scared they will get slapped down if they do.
