I unlocked my LG G4 bootloader knowing that it would void the warranty with LG (and possibly Three). I have found out from LG that my phone was in one the batches that was susceptible to the well publicized bootloop issue on the G4.

LG have since admitted that it's a hardware defect with devices that were manufactured before April. While not all devices in the affected batches will become faulty (i hope mine doesn't!), it does worry me that it might fail. Would i have any chance of getting it replaced seeing as it's a hardware defect which LG have admitted? How would i go about getting it repaired/replaced if it failed with the defect LG have admitted? Would it even be possible to argue that it should be replaced irrespective of the warranty seeing as it's a defect that LG have admitted to?

I did accept that any reasonable failure of the device would be down to me to get repaired at my own cost, i have no issue with that as i knew that when i unlocked the bootloader. I don't think i should have to pay to repair the device if it fails as a result of a hardware defect admitted by LG. Am i being unreasonable at all?

As far as I can tell LG approve of unlocking the bootloader so it might be ok.

My G4 was one of the effected models, it suddenly got stuck in the bootloader screen after upgrading from lollipop to marshmallow, no warning at all, after phoning lg customers services they were extremely helpful and organised it to be picked up for repair. They did ask me how long I'd owned the phone and where I bought it from, I was also asked if I had modified, flashed or changed the original software in anyway, and if I had I would be liable to pay the full cost of the repair process.
I hadn't so it never bothered me,
They send a currier with special packaging and require you to remove the back and battery from the phone plus any memory cards and sim cards, they only require the bare shell,
When I got my phone back a week later it looked like they'd basically just completely changed the entire rear of the phone but kept the original screen as the serial number was now different,
So if it's a box standard repair like this they might not even check for any modifications as it looks like completely new hardware bar the screen, no original data remains in the phone,
So you could get away with it should this happen.

Just experiencing the same now, with the boot loop problem. Only upgraded to Marshmallow a few days ago - related?

Anyway, LG are sending a courier to collect the phone as described in post above. Just wondered if you did a factory reset before sending off? I definitely have the bootloop problem but in all honesty I haven't done a factory reset yet as don't want it to stop looping and LG send it back without being fixed. I am certain that FR won't solve it but wondered what others have done before sending for repair?

Cheers

Nope.

1. Once your phone is unlocked, it will no longer be covered by LG warranty.
As we cannot guarantee the proper operation of our hardware with custom software, we are not able to maintain the full scope of warranty for your device after you have unlocked the bootloader.
Because of that we have a responsibility to let you know that defects which may result from, or were caused by custom device-software may not be covered by LG warranty.

LG can no longer guarantee the full functionality of your device after you unlock the bootloader. Unlocking your device may cause unexpected side effects that may include but are not limited to the following:
- Your device may stop working.
- Certain features and functionalities may be disabled.
- Your device may become unsafe to the point of causing you harm.
- Your device becomes physically damaged due to overheating.
- The behavior of your device may be altered.
- Some content on your device may no longer be accessible or playable due to invalid DRM keys.
- All your user data, settings, and accounts may disappear. (Therefore, we recommend that you backup all your data).
- Software updates delivered via LG FOTA (Firmware Over the Air) or Web Download services may not work on your device anymore.

LG will not be responsible for the damages caused by any custom software being flashed to your phone.

I believe in practice LG don't seem to actually care? I've heard many cases of people with unlocked bootloaders having their phones repaired for free.

From what I could tell from when mine went for repair, they basically swap the entire main body of the phone board, just the case and screen the same, new serial number and everything, so unless you admit to unlocking it I doubt they will spend the time to check given the amount of phones they have had to sort out.
