Really?- and when people get pancreatic cancer you laugh because they're a meat eater (and the sediment from that meat has been rotting them from the inside for years).

You can't generalise , you can have a perfectly healthy diet without eating meat.
And with eating meat.

In an effort to get some of the nutrients missing from meat I always used to drink a daily glug of hemp oil, but it's ridiculously expensive. Does anybody know if extra virgin rapeseed oil is actually just as good?

Exactly. I am a vegetarian and don't eat any form of life.
That must limit your diet, as all plants and animals are a form of life.

When did you last see a piece of cheese running around in the fields?

I like sacarstic people. I am not trying to hold a higher moral ground. I just don't like people who eat fish or meat calling themselves vegetarians.

That sounds a very odd thing for a doctor to say without telling you the exact reason, the most usual being a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can cause all kinds of serious problems. If you're one of the unlucky few who can't absorb enough of it, eating fish is unlikely to be of much help. You will probably be prescribed 3-monthly vitamin B12 injections, although many people are now claiming that this often isn't regular enough. Demand a blood test to find out why he is suggesting this rather simplistic answer to your problems.
Totally agree with you. I am a vegetarian, I am anemic and low in B12. I shouldn't start about B12, very passionate subject. Not all the doctors will give injections,
I am taking an under the tongue spray from H&B. I also have smoothies with spinach, kale and eat pistachios. All the other stuff from another post are also very good.

This is only my opinion, I had rather treat my deficiencies with eating vegetarian options than eating hormones pumped meat.

Everytime I see threads like this I vow to cut down on the meat; I'm sure I'll feel better for doing so too. Even on my non meat days I'll eat fish.

I need to search out some good veggie recipes for inspiration.

its against a background of blood results, scans and the fact that I am losing my sight at 44.

He has referred me to a proper dietician.

As you can imagine I don't want to continue losing my sight.
In such circumstances I certainly wouldn't be taking the advice of the DS "experts"!

Sight is very important. How is your glucose level?. Please eat what ever you want.
All we are trying to say is that there is nutrition in both veg and non veg options.

Hope things improve for you.

Don't you also have an eating disorder schmisk?
Anything that can be found in fish can be obtained from other sources.

I've never seen cheese running about a field but I know enough about it to realise it's formed by bacterial action on milk and bacteria are alive soeating cheese means you're consuming something that was alive

I think humans have enough bacteria in their guts.

Quite often they don't, especially after a course of antibiotics. That's why live yoghurt and probiotic drinks can be so useful.

Absolutely.
However for any vegans here sauerkraut has exactly the same probiotic benefit as live yoghurt and is very easy to make.

Actually there's quite a lot of research to show probiotics do very little.

My advice has to be not to listen to anyone's advice on this.

Its important to you and you must take the responsibility and do your own research.

Start with google and good luck to you.

Are you taking a mickey when recommending to ignore doctors wanting and use Google instead? I respect people who are vegetarians, I don't eat red meat myself, but if a doctor recomended that eating meat or at least fish would help curing some issues, I personally would not have any doubts when my health is at stake. Giving advices like this is very irresponsible.

GP's are not dieticians. I would recommend speaking to a dietician as a GP is not exactly an expert.

However a GP is far more qualified to give their patient advice than the armchair experts on here.

To suggest someone should ignore any advice given by a medical professional and make up their own mind based on a Google search is very irresponsible.

When my other half decided to become a veggie 4 years ago, I decided to cut out red meat.

I still eat fish and chicken. Never felt better.

"More qualified" doesn't really mean anything when the advice is wrong.

They might be, they might not be. GP's are jack of all trades and masters of none.

Every vegetarian I know seems to have 'health' issues. Can't be a coincidence.

Vegetarians live longer than meat eaters though, this is a proven fact. Some people have a problem with eating healthily when they become vegetarian, but overall it is extremely safe.
Vegetarians might live 3 years longer

3 worthless horrible baconless years

I will never get this ' but bacon' mentality.

I have lived quite happily for 40 years without the flesh of a pig, and I am quite content thank you.
