Motorola G external speaker just died

Had this Motorola G phone since Christmas, fine, no problems, then suddenly today when trying to show someone a YT video, there was no sound coming from the external speaker.

Tested on Spotify, TUne In etc, audio jack is working for headphones but no sound from external speaker. This is particularly a problem with the ringtone, I can't hear any text or call alerts now.

Googled and found this is a problem for Motorola E, but no info on G, apart from advice to 'twist' the phone - but no explanation of what 'twisting' the phone actually is?

Anybody know about a bug with this phone, I really need to have text and call alerts, it's useless otherwise?

Many thanks.

Does the headphone jack normally mute the speaker when you use it? Just wondering if there could be a fault with the headphone jack that is permanently muting the speaker?

There could be a switched set of contacts in the jack socket that mutes the speaker. If these contacts go faulty or the terminal on the circuit board is dodgy then it could mute the speaker but still work for headphones.

Trouble is you would probably need to take the phone apart to get at the socket to check and make any repair.

I will assume you have done all the usual checks to make sure any settings affecting the speaker are OK such as an On/Off or volume setting?

Have you tried rebooting the phone? Often this involves holding down the power button for a few seconds and you may get a message on screen asking if you want to completely power off or shut down all apps and restart. Try either option and see if that makes any difference. If some app has screwed up then that should clear it up and restore normal operation.

Cheers.

Yes, headphone socket mutes speaker, and headphones working fine.

It only gives option for Power Off, not restart or even a safe mode. I've had another look on Google, and it gives advice for performing Factory reset, not keen to do this on my own. To be fair, not expecting calls at weekend, so it won't be so bad, but Monday morning I may have to take it back to shop and ask.

Did check all audio settings btw. Thanks for reply tho!

Try the Power Off option. This completely shuts down the phone, so it won't receive any calls etc in this state. Leave it a few seconds then power back up again. That is basically what a Restart would do but automatically.

This now seems to be an intermittent problem. I did this, and the speaker seemed to be fixed. But whilst on hold to a bank (y know, when you put it on speakerphone to do something else) the speaker just went off again, and now I'm back to square one. Switching it off and on doesn't seem to have worked this time, would the fact that it came back tho suggest more a hardware rather than software problem?

Cheers for all help.
