That sounds useful, where would I get one from? Wouldn't the TV Engineers have used one of these when I called them out?

When an aerial picks up a TV signal it must be distributed around the house to wherever there is a TV.

The TV signal is "split up" into several identical signals for each TV.

Normally an electronic gadget is used to do the splitting. Into the electronic gadget goes the TV signal from the aerial, the gadget amplifies/duplicates the signal and outputs it.

On each output is a cable that goes to each location in the house where you want a TV. This cable plugs into the TV (or a Freeview box sat underneath)

So if the lounge TV is fine then probably the loft aerial is fine. But the distribution gadget could be faulty.

So I wonder if the TV repair people did a good job and checked the distribution box?

Where is the distribution box? If you can access it then you could swop the output cables 'round and see if the lounge TV then has the problem and the bedroom is now fixed.

If the fault went to the lounge TV then the solution would be to get a new distribution box.

You can NEVER get decent sound on any flatscreener, even expensive models are not that hot and the stereo sound sound imagery from the built in speakers tends to be crap.

You're best off with a TV which has digital coaxial and/or digital optical output that can be connected to a separate Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic II capable surround AV amp and speakers connected via digital coaxial or digital optical head and separate speakers.

Freeview HD as a buying choice is a good pointer;more and more services will eventually appear in this format, and it's a good idea to consider a TV which translates the transmitted HE-AAC sound on Freeview HD channels and those non-HD channels which transmit HE-AAC sound like Talking Pictures and Film4+1 to Dolby Digital so your surround AV amp can decode it giving the best sonic experience.

There are some Sony models (and presumably other makes?) that have decent speakers at the sides - and they sound pretty amazing, far better than CRT sets ever did.

However, it does make the sets considerably wider (and heavier).

Just to add (bib) that some relatively recent amps (I use a Sony STR-DN1030) allow the same experience via the HDMI connection and can "upscale" the (SD) picture at the same time.. Probably not useful for this discussion though.

The descriptions wrong, as its actually Full HD 1080p, and has Freeview HD

Could always hook up a cheap little DVD player to it.

According to the Sony website it's not full HD - that shouldn't be a problem though.

How do you know it is full HD? Unless it says on the box or in the manual what screen resolution it is you have no real way of knowing short of taking the TV apart and looking up the part number of the LCD panel.

Its 1920x1080, it even comes up when putting a HD channel on, that its 1080i/25Hz, and also when selecting the HDMI as the source.

Its also not supposed to have Freeview HD, but it does.

i'll grab a pic of it later on showing that its 1080, and Freeview HD.

EDIT: If you watch the currys video on the product page i linked above, it mentions on there that its Full HD, and Freeview HD.

The Currys website says it is not DVB-T2 but the Sony website does. Both however say that is is most definitely not a full HD set. And one would hope Sony would know something about their products

The fact that it may display 1080i or whatever on screen is meaningless. That could be the source video format it does not mean that the screen is that resolution. All it actually means is that the TV is capable of accepting a range of source resolutions and scaling them to fit the panel resolution.

The OSD shows the SIGNAL resolution, not the screen resolution, which there's no point displaying as it never changes. So it doesn't prove it's Full HD.

Does the set connect to the internet OK?, and the SMART features work? - I've yet to find one of that model that works, they connect to the Internet OK, but won't connect to the Sony servers to 'refresh internet content'.

I didn't know that, so it may not be 1080 afterall, it is Freeview HD though.


She doesn't have it connected to the internet, as its only for her bedroom, so i wouldn't know about that.

Its a cracking little Tv though
