Could a vet or someone in the know answer this for me?

My staffy, Paris, has gastroenteritis, so I had her at the vets today. Anyway, she's fine (ABs and antacids and she's more or less her normal crazy self), but I also asked could I have her chipped at the same time as she was due in on Wednesday and it saved a trip, only for him to tell me it wasn't possible. I then went out to pay and the receptionist noticed that I was coming back Wednesday for chipping and asked me why he hadn't done it. She then asked me to hang on a few minutes and went and said something to the first vet, then went and spoke to one of the vets and then a moment later the other vet told me to come back in and chipped Paris.

Now given that having her chipped wouldn't have caused a problem, why didn't the first vet do it there and then? The only difference in price was £2.50 - I apparently got a 20% discount so it cost a tenner - and it took 2 minutes if that, it was more about the inconvenience of having to drive her there in the first place.

So was the vet just being arse or is there a reason that it shouldn't have been done?

Maybe the first vet wanted a double consultation fee (yesterday's and Wednesday's)? My vet doesn't charge for an extra consultation if I take a pet back for the same reason within a couple of weeks or so - eg, one of my cats had a skin infection and the vet prescribed some drops and gave her a steroid jab, but it didn't clear up after a week so I took her back to see him and he only charged for a different medication. In your case, though, it would be a new consultation (for a different reason).

If it isn't cost, then I can't see why the chipping couldn't be done, unless your vet thought it would distress your already not-very-well staffy?

Very odd, anyway. I hope your Paris is feeling better. x

When I took one of my dogs into the Vet's and asked if someone could just scan her to find if she has a chip because I could not find the paperwork. (She was a rescue, so thought it had been done like to my others I got after her), They found she did not have a chip, and when I asked when I could come in for it, they said they could do it there and then, and they only charged me for the chip not a consultation.

I agree with Relly. Chipping is a minor procedure anyway.

How odd. As gastroenteritis is to do with the stomach and intestine, I can't think why a vet wouldn't chip a dog . It only takes a minute or so! Maybe they thought they'd get two consult fees from you? Or perhaps the vet really was just being an arse and didn't fancy completing the paperwork? I know from first hand experience they get tedious to fill in after a while, especially having to write in the vet's address in over and over again

When I asked how much it was to chip her when I made the initial appointment, it was £12.50 total so even the standard consultation fee of £27.50 wouldn't have been earned. When I mentioned it to my housemate (she usually takes Paris to the vet), she asked me which vet it was and then said if it's the one she's seen a few times then he is "a bit odd". At least I know it's not something that's going to cause problems.

She's more or less back to normal, although she's slightly more sedate with it. She's currently in a sulk with me because she wasn't allowed a Sunday dinner today and was stuck with pasta, so she's been glaring at me and grumbling under her breath for the past few hours.

Not a human Sunday dinner, I hope!

Why not? My dog gets Sunday dinner (the parts suitable for her at least). Same with a chicken, pork or beef dinner, casserole and shepherds pie
