Why are there so many Feats?
Probably been asked before sorry but why are there so many feats in the charts?
In the top 10 there are 7..... SEVEN feats . Don't mind the odd one or two but it seems to be taking over. Can an individual artist not sell on their own credit? Whats it all about? |

I heard one of the reasons is to get you played on US radio , certain artists are payola on US radio so if you feature them you are more likely to get your song played, dont know if this is true or not.

Don't knock it. It's a very useful indicator of a track that needs avoiding.

Or do they all appreciate each others work so much that they just can't wait to work together? Or is it to show us how eclectic / diverse / genre-transcendent they are? |

There's many a song has been ruined by having some rapper say "uh uh that's my girl" or some other meaningless nonsense towards the end.

Doesn't bother me at all, as long as the song is decent then who cares?

I cannot stand 99% of 'featurings', espesially the obligatory rent-a-rappers ruining otherwise good songs. If I like an artist I want to hear them and only them on their songs, not a load of other people tagged onto them for what seems like the sake of it. I've lost count the amount of songs I really like the sound of but then someone starts the predictable rap part in the middle, the usual 'uh uh, yeah, yeah, come on, uh uh, yo...' with this same sort of forced, affected accent they put on and I immediately tune out of the song, it's just ruined for me at that point, it takes me out of the song, so to speak. Rap intros to songs also really annoy me, like the beginnings of Rihanna's Umbrella and What's My Name, for example - I fast forward through the starts of those songs, especially Drake's horrendous droney, whiney effort on the latter. Plus another thing I can't stand is when they say their own name in the song! It just sounds so unbelieveably ridiculous, stupid and egotistical! I love Mariah's I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time - the original album version, that is. I remember I was pleased when I heard she was releasing it as a single, until I heard the single version and saw the video, complete with a newly added rent-a-rapper! How to ruin a great song! Thank goodness I can still listen to the original album version! I wish there was a version of Rihanna's What's My Name without Drake waffling on it though, the song would be fantastic without him!

Some artists lost out in the past. The Crystals 'He's a Rebel' should be The Crystals feat. Darlene Love. It should also be "My Girl' by the Temptations Ft. Smokey Robinson (or the other way around). There's a good article on this in Salon online mag. If you follow this logic there are many recordings in the past that should have the Ft. epithet. "Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones ft. Merry Clayton 'Walk This Way' by Run-DMC ft Aerosmith 'Freak Like Me' by The Sugababes ft The Tubeway Army I'm sure there are many more. |

I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. To be positive about the featured artist, does it not suggest that music is a collaborative process? The real myth is the solo artist who is entirely in control of the creative process. There are far fewer of those - Prince, Stevie Wonder, Dylan, Kate Bush, Springsteen, Van Morrison....?

If TV progs did this It would be like Coronation Street being interrupted for 2 mins as the cast of Eastenders burst into the Rovers for no reason, other than to try and grab viewers. |

It struck me several years ago - I'm not sure if this still occurs today - that many 'featuring' artists are/ were not originally 'featured' until and unless they became famous in their own right. I clearly remember Rita Ora was not originally credited, at least not in all media, as featuring on Hot Right Now. Sia was not originally credited as featuring on Titanium, and there have been several others where the 'feat.' credit was not added until the 'guest' artist became famous themselves. I wondered if that was a request the guest artist or their record company subsequently made, or whether it was the main artist or their record company jumping on the new artist's band-wagon.

I very much doubt that Bang Bang would of been such a big hit if Jessie J did not have Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj on it. By having Minaj on it, the song was not just sent to Pop stations but to Urban stations as well which therefore increases a songs chance by expanding to a different target audience. While Domino and Price Tag were hits before Bang Bang, this was song remains her biggest hit in the US and in many different countries. Largely because of the two featured artists. |

Radio play and music channel play is what makes a song popular. If its not featured on either of those - you've no chance.
Think Gwen Stefani's single and Sandi Thom's single. |

Cause also both fans of each act = the single becoming a bigger hit .

I just contributed to another music thread on here and asked exactly the same question .. then I scroll further down and see this post - what an extraordinary coincidence!
I postulated the theory that many artists haven't got the kudos to promote their music alone without the endorsement of another, perhaps better known, artist. I'd be interested to know what the general reason for this trend is, as explained by the music moguls themselves. |
