I don't watch neighbours but I heard they did it recently, and I'm pretty sure Emmerdale did it a few times around the time Val died. Obviously nothing excessive should happen, but do you think it'd be fit the soaps? Or should that kind of stuff be left to TV dramas?

I think music can really make the scene. There's a song by sia played at the end of "six feet under". It still gives me chills when I hear it as it brings back memories of it

I think on very rare occasions it can add emotion or tension to a scene, but usually only ones with little or no dialog.

A few years ago Emmerdale went through a spell of using incidental music in episodes, and a few times it worked really well, but then they started to overuse it and it didn't have the same effect.

I think music works amazingly in soap trailers or if it's a scene where there's no dialogue but the overuse of it becomes meaningless as is the case on Hollyoaks imo.

I think it also works well in emotional scenes where there is no dialogue too, like the scene in Emmerdale that I posted above your post.

OMG yes, the song was Breathe Me. Just the best ever season finale to any show ever. But it worked so well because there was no talking, just Claire driving her car across America and the fates of all the characters revealed. Still makes me choke up when I think about it.

In answer to the OP, yes, I think non-diegetic music can really complete an emotional scene but it needs to be used sparingly, and preferably not over characters talking. EE have in the last couple of years had a couple of episodes that have begun or ended with songs - like the sad one that played when Stan died (it's on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember what it was), and more recently Thank You For The Days for the montage at the start of Peggy's funeral episode, and I think they've worked well.

The US soaps have always (as far as I know) had background music and I have to say after watching the British soaps I think no music is the way to go. The music can distract from what is going on in the scene.

Absolutely not unless there would actually music playing in real life. You don't have accompanying music if you have an emotional scene at home or when you go walking in the countryside or along the street.

Home and Away always does it. It's obvious when something dramatic is about to happen as they up the tempo! 😂

Not unless it's appropriate like in a cafe or pub. Otherwise it's distracting and too loud at times so you can't hear the actors properly.

Emmerdale went through a period in the mid-00s of using incidental music and it was, IIRC, nearly almost brilliant.

Only on rare occasions. Having said that, whenever EE seem to add music over a scene, it feels really cringed because they choose the wrong scenes to add it to in my opinion.
