Has there been any update on the rollout of wifi over VM hubs and cabinets?

I haven't seen anything lately.

So here we are at the end of 2016, the year VM said the service would start.

Think it has started. When checking available wifi at home, in addition to mine there is a Virgin Media wifi available. If I turn my broadband off, my mobile switches to this via the app.

Is that actually off a customer Superhub Public WiFi though?

Or a normal public Virgin Media WiFi spot:

In my area the Superhubs are not currently putting out any public WiFi.

I'd be pretty miffed if VM just decided to share the bandwidth that I'm paying for without any consultation or recompense. BT, in theory, do allow BT-Fon mobile connections (as I recall) if you allow wi-fi access via your HH.

The publically available WiFi will have its own bandwidth allocated.

I had a quick look at the VM wifi app for Android last night and had a quick look where the hot spots are in my area and the only one showing within half a mile is one in Greggs the bakers so no wifi coming from home routers.

When they (VM) first talk about this they said you can opt out if you wanted but you won’t be able to use other home hot spots if you do.

With my setup using the SH2 in modem mode I’m excluded anyway.

One thing though, does the smartphone app allow VM BB customer to connect to the public wifi networks like the one here in Greggs because I’ve always thought you could only do that if you had a VM mobile sim account.

As far as I know, the hotspots in places like Greggs are part of Sky's 'The Cloud' network and are only available to Virgin Mobile customers.

The hotspots powered by other customer's Hubs will be available to all VM Broadband customers, unless they opt-out or use modem mode.

I'm not sure about that because a pub local to me has sky cloud and it doesn't show as a hotspot on the app, Greggs and KFC do though.

Virgin media have recently bought arqiva wi-fi so I would presume that once launched any wi-fi that was ran in pubs restraunts etc would be all.part of the new service just my two pence worth

Once the app has provisioned your device you should be able to connect to any unless mistaken. I already have provisioning profiles for Cloud so haven't tried.

The hub provided network (from down the road) seems to allow data whether my hub is in router mode or modem. Either way mine doesn't transmit public SSID yet.

There's no captive portal and the network is secured by 802.11x enterprise so cannot be connected to without provision, meaning a Windows laptop wouldn't be able to connect.

I have a WiFi analyser app on my phone. A few days ago I noticed a network called "Virgin Media" transmitting from my router on the same channel as my home network. This I believe was causing faults with my home network (includes 3 repeater bridges) so decided to opt out. This can be done online but having done this, "Virgin Media" was still transmitting. A phone call to VM resulted in "Wait a couple of days and see what happens" message which is probably fair enough at this time of year. However if anyone wishes to remove the hotspot themselves, a factory reset of the router and reinstall of personal setups was successful.
HTH.

The simple answer would be to have them installed in there own hubs/cabinets but that is to simple for them

The cabinets are too far away from most homes to be of any use, whereas if a neighbor has it and mine goes down I would be able to log into the neighbors hot spot

If you sign in to the app are you allowing them to use your router as a hotspot?
